An important point. Small effects may reflect what was tested, not the limits of behaviour change interventions. We also need to examine whether the selected methods were appropriate, their conditions for effectiveness were preserved and the intervention was implemented as intended.

Behaviour change papers often identify determinants and then list intervention components, without showing the reasoning behind them. Intervention Mapping makes those links explicit. But how much detail is enough to make an intervention understandable and replicable without overwhelming the paper?

Very interesting read. Quite relatable, too. I may have been guilty of trying to research barriers and enablers as well – almost always, barriers we identified were also enablers in a different context, and vice versa. The more in-depth approach proposed here is helpful
