The good news: More people are waking up to the dishonesty and incompetence of the Trump regime. The bad news: Dictators become more dangerous when people wake up to their dishonesty and incompetence. My Stop the Presses newsletter assesses the outlook 3 weeks from the midterms.

In an authoritarian regime, a tax authority becomes a means to target enemies, and protect corruption. Trump has already given himself and his family audit immunity from the IRS and discussed auditing his opponents. Compared to 2024, IRS employees no longer feel they can report abuses of power.
In 2025, only one fifth of surveyed Treasury employees were "completely" or "very" confident they could report rulebreaking without facing retaliation.
In the Office Of Personnel Management's (OPM) 2024 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS), a majority of Treasury employees reported they could report a rule violation without fear of reprisal and that favoritism and political influence were not tolerated. In 2025, after OPM cancelled FEVS, the nonprofit Partnership for Public Service (PPS) fielded a survey of federal employees with similar questions. These two surveys are not directly comparable due to methodological differences. But without an official government-administered survey, PPS is the best data available.
