Keene Mutual Aid is a community of people who are dedicated to sharing and taking care of each other, and who volunteer their time weekly towards achieving the goal of creating a community where everyone's basic needs are met.
How is Keene Mutual Aid structured?
One way that we are unlike other groups is that we are anti-hierarchy. Hierarchies are structures of power and control, like governments, militaries, or businesses. Keene Mutual Aid operates like a network, rather than a pyramid.
We try our best to organize things horizontally. Horizontal organization means that nobody is the boss or in charge of anybody else. People make small decisions for themselves, with input and support from the rest of the group. For big decisions, we use what's called a consensus-based decision making model, where everyone gets an equal say, and the priority is compromise. We believe that everyone should have a say in how the group works, and we constantly try to incorporate feedback and update our systems based on what people need.
We are a 501c3 nonprofit, a legal status that allows us to accept donations and have a bank account.
We are not a business. We're not social workers or a religious group, and we don't receive any government funding. Nobody gets paid to participate in Keene Mutual Aid.

Do I need to be an Anarchist to join or come to the Free Store?
No! The exact reason we function under the anarchist philosophy of Mutual Aid is that we believe all humans should have access to basic resources regardless of their personal beliefs.

"Mutual Aid" is an anarchist philosophy that argues humans as a species all do better when we share and work together, as opposed to fighting each other for resources or competing. It's based on Peter Kropotkin's study of human history and animal relationships, where he observed that many species and societies naturally worked as collaborative groups. He criticized modern capitalism and competitive economics, which he said isolated people from each other, forcing us to work and struggle more than we would if we worked together in our communities. We live in a world where there is an abundant amount of food, shelter, clothing, and other resources, and yet the way our economy is structured forces some people to go hungry, go unsheltered, and live harsh, uncomfortable lives. At KMA, our goal is to work together as a local community to help people get the resources that they need to live happy, healthy, fulfilling lives.

Keene Mutual Aid is 100% volunteer, and everyone is there because we want to be there, not because we have to be there. The free store is used by both members of the community and our own volunteers; the resources go to whoever needs it. This is why it is called "Mutual" Aid—we help one another through a system of giving and taking that benefits everyone involved. We want to make this type of experience the norm in Keene.

Our primary project is our Free Store. A "Free Store" can take many forms, but ours is a once-a-week pop-up where volunteers help distribute supplies to people in need. We set up folding tables in Railroad Square downtown, fill 'em up with food, hygiene items, harm reduction supplies, first aid needs, and other basics, and folks can come through and take what they need, no questions asked, completely for free. There is no application or means-test to take things from the Free Store-it is completely open to the public. It's not just a place for groceries either... it is also a place to gather as a community, meet up with friends, have a free cup of coffee, and so much more. Hi there! My name is Brittany and my family and lare trying to get home to NH.
On the evening of March 1st, 2025, my house burst into flames. All of our belongings and our whole house were destroyed in the incident.
For the past year, I have had to move around the country with my two youngest kids, Ezra & Austin, in order to not be on the street, which has been difficult as a part-time wheelchair user. We have been in South Carolina for the past few months.
It's time for us to come home and reunite with my two oldest kids, Nyx & Zayden, who are still in NH. Any donations will be used to cover moving costs and help find us permanent housing.

Something that helps out small charities a lot is recurring donations set up via paypal—$5 a month that always comes in is way more valuable than the $60 you may or may not remember to donate on Giving Tuesday. It doesn’t have to be a lot! Don’t feel bad if you can only afford $1 or $2 a month
