I think we don't talk enough about how car dependency sucks for everyone, including drivers, who don't actually want to live in constant fear of a $400 repair or to have to buy their kid an SUV the minute they turn 16 so they're not stuck chauffeuring them everywhere. Love when surveys confirm it!

I think in safe streets advocacy, we have a knee-jerk tendency to say that people speed for just one reason —  because they can. But we actually make it impossible for cars to break limits, we have to sweat the psychology of individual drivers. Which, it turns out, is *all over the map.*

It's easy to jump to conclusions about why so many drivers continuously break speed limits, whether you assume they just can't help it or just don't care about anyone but themselves.

Here's what I wrote about it back when it was first teased last year. Still just as colossally dumb as it was back then; still hilarious how this might inadvertently steer investment to blue states if they don't get very creative with the formula/exclude the "marriage" part.

And that doesn't mean watering down the ambitions of the livable streets movement. It means giving us a fighting shot at actually achieving them at scale, because we're organizing in relationship to the actual power dynamics and transportation realities that exist in our world.

Basically: I think it's really easy be adversarial and say "we tried designing for drivers for 100 years, now it's time to refocus on people." I think it's a lot harder to reckon with the reality that *most people are drivers* and find ways to unwind blanket autocentricity that actually work.

Fascinated by this report, which argues a ton of things that sound questionable out context. E.g. walkability folks need to pay more attention to the needs of drivers, the "complete streets" model is failing us, we need to make parking easier. But in context ... I found myself agreeing a lot?!

Excited to see this idea get an IRL deployment; *not* excited to see how many drivers were totally unmoved even when the city went out of its way to explain that road design changes needed to happen because a teenager died; still curious long term, to see how this strategy changes the conversation.

Lotta thoughts on this but mostly: this is sort of like doing a buyback program for AK47s, paying people who bring in their broken nerf guns, doing nothing re: upstream gun control, and being surprised when shootings don't stop.

So this is nuts; Orange County did an "e-bike buyback" event where they paid people up to $1,000 for illegal e-motos...and smaller amounts for legal, unmodified e-bikes that are super unlikely to hurt anyone. At multiple points, the cops refuse to pay for "bikes" that can go up to 40mph.

My big takeaway from this: at the end of the day big data centers and big urban highways are both just infrastructure designed to encourage the use of fossil fuels, no matter how their supposed "community benefits" are sold to us. and the movements resisting each one should absolutely join forces.

There are a lot of reasons to oppose hyperscale datacenters for the impacts this slice of the AI industry has on society. But I hadn't seen anyone unpack their impacts on land use, transportation, and the fabric of our communities. Loved talking to Saul Levin of @thehumpod.bsky.social about it.

I think it's really easy to talk about how car culture is accelerating our country's descent into becoming nothing more than a small handful of corporations in a trench coat (and I have!) But it's worth noting that transit is not immune, and it is not inherently more humane.

Context check: he was predicting that gas demand would soften "as we move out of summer driving season" post-Labor Day and people start taking fewer road trips. But it's still fun to imagine a day when "fiscal conservatives" finally realize how fiscally insane mass car dependency has always been.

3) Advocates have to get our elected officials to do two things: refuse to negotiate over the next bill until the executive branch stops holding the current one hostage, and then write a new one that throws out policies that we know aren't working. It won't be easy. But we can do this together.
040
Kea Wilson @keawilson.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
2) ...but Trump is by far not the only problem here. The bigger one is how little Congress knows or cares about how messed up our transportation system is, and how eager politicians on both sides of the aisle are to pass terrible bills just to say they had a "bipartisan win."
180
Kea Wilson @keawilson.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
My big takeaways for advocates: 1) The current law is extended until Dec 11, and it should probably keep getting extended until the Trump administration proves it can follow *any* transportation law, even if the one we have now kind of sucks. And that includes restoring money it illegally rescinded.

Even if you don't care about transit, you should be disturbed by how many different strategies this White House has found to subvert the will of Congress re: shared modes. Because it's writing a playbook that it can and will use to mess with things you *do* care about somewhere down the line.

This is in addition to illegal clawbacks, endless grant "reviews", slow-walking contracts until congress passes a budget rescinding the funds...on and on. Asking commuter railroads to hold 325-400M in insurance is crazy, class 1 railroads generally self insure given their size. We let road vehicles get away with basically nothing and people scream if you suggest at least 100k for personal Autos and 2.5M for trucks (both of which are still too low)
