In 1890 Robert Koch claimed he had discovered a cure for tuberculosis. However, this cure is often referred to as Koch's greatest failure. This is one of the earliest specimens of Koch's original tuberculin to be received in Edinburgh.

We lived in France for 5 years under Macron. The French always dislike their presidents but Macron is a treat for Brits - a real Statesman who knows his stuff. Trump is a sulky kid who shouldn’t be allowed to end a conversation like that. God he’s scary.

Celebrations in order! I've just submitted the completed manuscript 1st draft of a book about this strange man. Friedrich Nietzsche was, it seems, a prophet. There's some difficult stuff to read but he predicted the mess we're in, that's for certain.

I am sick of people demonising being nice. I am writing a book about Nietzsche at the moment and I feel victimised - he has a big problem with compassion - BEING NICE IS NICE and not just for the nice person.

The first hollow hypodermic needle was invented by Alexander Wood in 1853. It allowed drugs to be injected in the body under the skin. Accompanied by different length needles, this example is made from silver with a glass barrel. It works by turning the screw at the top to inject the liquid.

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com
Two figures walk along a corridor lined with complex machinery.

The worker says "Congratulations, sir! The most intelligent machine ever created is ready to change the world. Ten billion dollars well spent... What shall we ask it to do? "

The billionaire replies "That's my business, not yours. Close the door on your way out."

Now alone with the machine, the billionaire asteps closer and asks quietly "Can you Make people like me?"
it says "No"

My new year’s resolution generator for @theguardian.com. Let me know what you get!
Title: Still haven't made a new year's resolution? Let us help you generate one!

Image: a diagram which asks you to input “The year of your birth added to the number of pets in your home”, “The number of days in the current month plus your shoe size” and “The sum of the first three digits in your telephone number” which will seemingly make a random resolution but actually always* makes “support your local bookshop”.

*Unless you have size 68 shoes or a negative number of pets or some other nonsense in which case you will get the silly outcome you deserve.
