Answered my first @bemyeyes.bsky.social call yesterday. Usually am not quick enough. Helped a very nice guy in Philly solve his tv volume issues.

NYC's civil service system was built to ensure city jobs go to qualified candidates, not political connections. But implementation has created its own barriers: 👉 Lists valid for 4+ years 👉 Long waits between offer and start 👉 Multiple exams to stay eligible for one role

We've created a world where we're okay with government IT failures. Colorado just said they aren't. They're restructuring in a big way that is going to have real implications for how government delivers in the US. I wrote about it over on Substack: publicsectorjobboard.substack.com/p/colorado-s...

Colorado Said the Quiet Part Out Loud
Government IT fails constantly. It almost never admits it. Colorado just did.

Some great quotes from @audreyt.org : “pre-mature optimization is the root of all evil”- we need flexible systems that are “good enough” so we can build things for now and the future “AI in the loop of humans instead of humans in the loop of AI”- get folks off the hamster wheel

Excited to hear @audreyt.org speak in person for the first time. She spoke on building trust in the democratic process and efforts in Taiwan to combat disinformation and polarization. Particularly interested in how they’ve used broad listening to build plurality and agreement.

When asked about the personal and professional losses of being pushed out of government, Michael Boyce didn't hesitate: "Your identity is being a civil servant." Listen to the full conversation here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfRL...

Glad to see an early example of doing the right thing. We shouldn't be deferring to non-experts who don't know what is actually safe. DOT has incredible bike planners and other planners and engineers who have dedicated themselves to understanding street safety and flow. Let's trust them.

Mark Kelly puts out a statement saying "The President of the United States just overthrew a foreign ruler and explained to the American people that this is about taking control of the oil reserves of a foreign nation." This is probably the strongest statement alongside Gallego's I've read.
“The President of the United States just overthrew a foreign ruler and explained to the American people that this is about taking control of the oil reserves of a foreign nation. He said that the U.S. will “run the country” until a proper transition can take place and went right into how U.S. oil companies will benefit from this takeover. He doesn’t understand the risks and costs involved with these poorly thought-out decisions that don’t make Americans any safer today than they were yesterday.

“Nicolás Maduro is a brutal, illegitimate dictator who deserves to face justice. I want the people of Venezuela to be free to choose their own future, but if we learned anything from the Iraq war, it’s that dropping bombs or toppling a leader doesn’t guarantee democracy, stability, or make Americans safer. More often, it leads to chaos or drags the U.S. into a war and lengthy occupation. I don’t trust that this administration has a plan, timeline, or price tag for what comes next.

“Over the past year, Trump’s foreign policy has been reckless, chaotic, self-serving, and unconstitutional. Congress should vote this week to reassert its authority on behalf of the American people before he oversteps again. I also want to recognize the professionalism and skill of the American service members involved in this operation. While I don’t agree with the administration’s justification for this, I’m thankful that no service members were killed or seriously injured.”

Excited that @publicgood.tech is on Bluesky! I’ve been on the board for a year now and have seen the incredible support we’ve been able to give to RIF’ed and furloughed federal staff and others during that year. Together in community during tough times.

Trump gets a pass on violent rhetoric, and he shouldn't. Calling the police is the correct response. Journalists should also take this seriously, demanding explanations and accountability from the White House, instead of pretending this is just a Thursday.

Cuomo had YEARS as governor to address the real issues with rent stabilization - things like illegally destabilized units, lack of oversight, outdated technology managing the program, lack of landlord accountability, vacant units etc., and did just about nothing. 1/9 www.nytimes.com/2025/08/12/n...

18F, the federal government’s technology shop, was demolished by Musk’s team shortly after midnight. It was a cost-recoverable org, charging agencies for their expertise, using a consulting model. Its cost to government was negligible, its benefits huge. My team there once saved DoD $500 billion.
