@tomjennings OK, you know I can't resist that kind of bait. Tracked down the OMNI article! Hapgood, Fred. “Artificial Intelligence.” *Omni*, March 1988, pp 106.
"Last year Fidonet acquired a board of directors, which established dues, protocols, and other organizational guidelines In August they held a major conference, in part to discuss these matters and to announce the newly elected board . Perhaps not surprisingly, by this time Jennings had stepped aside-two years of nonstop work had taken its toll . He needed a rest an,d escaped to his skateboard. In honor of his accomplishments. which they had inherited, the board of directors voted to give "T.J ." a special award at the conference.

"As he walked to the podium, wearing a black sweatshirt, worn blue Jeans, anklehigh red sneakers, and three twists of phone wire gracing one ear, Jennings got a terrific hand, which made his speech even more shocking . "There's no pleasant way to say it," he began. "You can view this from the point of view [that] there's a severe interest in anarchy here. This [Fidonet] was an implemented anarchist scheme of sorts. It was run by the members of the net. and now we have a top-down structure. So for what it's worth, my two cents."

"Somewhat elliptical, but everyone got the point. The man who had created the first truly decentralized and affordable computer network didn't like what was happening. And single-handedly, once again, he was out to shake it up."

SYSADMIN'S BLUES
Parody of "Smuggler's Blues" by Glenn Frey
By Delchi (October, 2004)

There's trouble on the net tonight,
I can feel it in my bones.
I had a premonition,
That I should not go home.
I knew the box was patched
and the IDS set to kill
Some user clicked on something,
And the data began to spill.
So baby, here's your pager,
With your sniffer log in hand.
Here's a little caffiene,
Do it just the way we planned.
keep it up for twenty hours
And I'll pay you twenty grand.
I'm sorry it went down like this,
Someone had to lose,
It's the nature of the business,
It's the sysadmin's blues.

Reading 90s nightlife reports from the Boston Phoenix archives. On the closing of The Napoleon Club in 1998: "first opened as a Prohibition-era speakeasy in 1929. From 1952 on, it operated as a gay bar..." bostonphoenix.com/archive/1in10/98/…
"For those of you who never had the pleasure, you missed out on one of the most amazing nocturnal experiences our little town had to offer. My favorite memory is from a night a couple of years ago. It was fairly early, before the evening crowd had arrived, and without any prompting, a fairly plain-looking guy in an Anderson Little suit moved from the bar and parked himself at the piano. Placing his drink atop a coaster, he launched into the most spirited rendition of "Oklahoma" that I have ever heard. I fully expected Shirley Jones to come around the corner in full costume to complete the scene. I imagined that he had just spent the whole day working downtown at a bank he managed, singing the song over and over to himself, and when that last teller cashed out, he beelined to Nappy's to get it out of his system. And in true Napoleon's tradition, the few patrons in the room either moved to join him around the piano or just smiled to themselves and sang along from their places at the bar. Thank you, Napoleon's, for 60 years of entertainment."

"An obvious question is: “Who cares?” We contend that those who value Twitter specifically and public-facing academic research more generally should care about these results. Although the net effect of Twitter on political and intellectual life will continue to be debated, as summarized previously, there are many parties that will be affected by the decline of academic Twitter."

"Those who believe that Twitter generated fruitful discussion about working papers should care about the evidence presented in this article. Those who became aware of junior scholars’ research that they otherwise would not have should care, as should those who were introduced to academics from underrepresented backgrounds in the academy. Furthermore, the nonacademics who were introduced to and followed the scholars in our dataset also should care, as well as anyone who values the principle of independent research reaching a wider, nonacademic audience."
