Today marks three years since the terrorist attacks of 7 October in Israel. We honour the victims and stand with the families who still carry the heavy weight of grief. We remember the young lives cut short at a music festival. And the long ordeal of the hostages.

The EU remains ready to help turn today’s fragile ceasefire into a durable peace, based on a two-state solution. And remains equally convinced that nothing justifies terror.

The 7 October attacks were a barbaric act of terror. Today, we stand with Israel in remembering every life taken and destroyed at the hands of the Hamas terrorists. Our thoughts are with the victims, the survivors, their families and all those who continue to carry the pain of that terrible day.

We must firmly reject any form of antisemitism across Europe. Jewish communities must be able to live openly, safely and without fear. Hamas brought unspeakable suffering to the Israeli people and left devastation in its wake. Hamas must disarm so that the Gaza Peace Plan to move forward

DDG Nordquist: Trade continues apace, showing resiliency
Speaking at a panel on leadership in global trade at the 17th Swiss Coffee Trade Association (SCTA) Forum on 1 October in Montreux, Deputy Director-General DJ Nordquist said that the WTO and its basic functions are increasingly important as geopolitics and economic security now play a much bigger role in trade decisions, with companies having to think more about geopolitical exposure, security of supply, regulatory risk and resilience.

Russia’s sham Duma elections were an insult to Ukraine, to the Russian people, and to democracy itself. Putin hates democracy because he is threatened by it. That is why – along with destroying civil society and repressing political opposition – Russia meddles in the democratic space of others.

What the EU needs to demonstrate in this crisis is not simply that Europe has a position, but that: Europe can prevent escalation, mobilise partners, protect humanitarian access, and keep a political solution within reach. 🇪🇺🤘

Dear, EEAS/High Representative Do not wait for the conflict to become regional before treating it as a regional security crisis. Let the African Union lead the political process, but make sure Europe provides enough diplomatic, financial and operational capacity for that leadership to work. 1/

Before we seek to control AI through regulation, we must first answer this question: “What kind of society should emerge from that relationship?” Because even the best-regulated AI can create deeper social problems if the relationship between humans and AI is fundamentally designed in the wrong way.
