Here is the list of programs that ED effectively seeks to move to other agencies. Many higher education programs will go to the Department of Labor, but the most obvious move (Federal Student Aid to Treasury) is not happening at this time.

My latest is the story of how my community has rallied to protect and defend our neighbors in recent days, as ICE has targeted the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago. "This is not a story about a moment of victory, but a moment of being reminded of our power."

For NCES (ED), ESRA outlines the data required for collection & dissemination, with some leeway for additional data needed for COE reporting (e.g., longitudinal studies) www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/...

so much more was to come from the NCES longitudinal studies, especially high school which has been a mainstay since the 1970s. HS&B:22 was planned to follow students through 12th grade and after, through postsecondary and career transitions.

TONIGHT — Just after 8:30pm tonight, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker shared that the Texas National Guard is being deployed to Chicago. “This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States.”
CHICAGO – Today, Governor JB Pritzker released the following statement after the Illinois National Guard was informed that the Texas National Guard is preparing deployments to Illinois:

“This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate.

“We must now start calling this what it is: Trump’s Invasion. It started with federal agents, it will soon include deploying federalized members of the Illinois National Guard against our wishes, and it will now involve sending in another state’s military troops.

“I call on Governor Abbott to immediately withdraw any support for this decision and refuse to coordinate. There is no reason a President should send military troops into a sovereign state without their knowledge, consent, or cooperation.

“The brave men and women who serve in our national guards must not be used as political props. This is a moment where every American must speak up and help stop this madness."

A terrorist targeted federal workers last week. There wasn’t much reporting on it. But I’m not finished thinking about it! 🧵 An anti-vaxxer fired more than 500 gunshots into CDC Atlanta, shattering 150 “blast-proof” windows on 6 buildings. Employees were pinned down in terror.

nearly all NCES staff were RIF’d on 8/1. though NCES is dependent on contractors, it is NCES’ name and reputation on the line when things aren’t correct. and public trust of governmental data and institutions.

Trainings are also NEEDED if any administration plans to penalize institutions for late, incomplete, or inaccurate data. but who will train, collect, oversee, and analyze these changes? who will perform all of the new accuracy checks? who will ensure products meet statistical standards?

Kristi @kdonnn.bsky.social · 13/08/2025
2) IPEDS would also host training sessions, especially for CHANGES. Questions always come up! sometimes things aren’t clear! Trainings provide consistent information to users and help reduce their burden in answering (already a tall task for IPEDS, esp. at smaller institutions or without IR)

Feedback from TRPs inform survey changes, which are submitted to the Federal Register for public notice and input. agencies are required to submit such changes, and anyone can provide comments on them! (tbh, I had little exposure to this before joining ED)

Technical Review Panels (TRP) are a preliminary source of input. Data users AND data providers give their input on proposed changes. do they collect those data? how will it impact their operations? what nuances should we be aware of? what is useful to collect? what are some use cases?

a few things: 1) I am grateful for Carolyn’s post over the weekend, which provides context for changes already in motion (r/e disagg in admissions). she also highlights how *time intensive* it is to add new questions. they need to be tested, and they need public input!
