Sad news. I asked for and received his brand new _The Writing of Canadian History_ and Donald Creighton’s not so new _Empire of the St Lawrence_ for Christmas, when I was in the middle of second year university (December 1976) and had just changed my majors.

FAILED: Hamilton council defeated a proposed bylaw to pause development of AI data centres in the city

Hamilton's data centre moratorium could be a Canadian first, researcher says, and more could follow | CBC News
Hamilton could soon have a bylaw pausing data centre developments in the city. It would be the first in the country to do so, researcher Anne Pasek says.

Thanks to @stillots1.bsky.social for sharing her cancer journey. An important observation about both the limbo in which modern medicine puts many of us. I am grateful to be facing that limbo when almost 70 and not when almost 40 or 50. I cannot imagine how one would make career decisions.

I have no idea the actual shape of the bell curve, but on a curve of responses to stage IV cancer treatments, my oncologist tells me I am riding the rocket! I am hardly an overachiever, but this seems like a particularly good time to be one.

Don’t have the breakdown for McMaster, but our Salary Statistics may suggest trends. Percentage of Full professors has not changed 2023-25 vs 2000-01. Average age of full professors now 59.2 vs 53. But average years at university, however, just up 21.8 vs 20. Later career starts?

Quite right. We wouldn’t wish someone with diabetes or epilepsy a quick recovery. Nor would we talk about “fighting” those conditions. We can wish them effective treatment and management, with few negative side effects, which is what I wish for all those living with cancer. Including you, and me.
