I have been working in CRM for 19 years. The data show that the vast majority of federal projects proceed through the Section 106 process quickly & without issue. For 60 years the process has been bringing people together to find creative ways to protect and preserve our important resources.

NCSHPO flyer explaining current threats to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and to SHPOs, THPOs, preservation professionals, and the public. The proposal federal budget seeks to eliminate the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF), which would 1) decimate the statutory work of states, tribes, and stakeholders and remove our input from federal decision making; 2) slow or halt infrastructure projects and historic tax credit rehabilitation projects- discouraging private investment and hampering economic growth; 3) the proposed budget falsely claims HPF funding is ‘duplicative’ and that funded projects are not nationally significant; 4) the proposal fails to acknowledge the federal government’s trust and fiduciary responsibility to Tribes; and 4) the proposal puts our historic properties at risk.

The Butterfield Overland carried mail between Saint Louis / Memphis and San Francisco, but with the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 federal mail operations shifted north to avoid Indian Territory. www.okhistory.org/publications...

Spent the last couple of days touring sites along the Indian Territory segment of the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach route (1858-1861) culminating in a beautiful view from Colbert’s Ferry
View from north bank of the Red River showing mixed hardwoods with leaves in a range of fall colors in the foreground overlooking sunlight glistening off the river and the wooded south bank of the river in the background.

I’ve met so many archaeologists because people are willing to come ask me if we’re related, and that’s been really wonderful (Thanks, Don!) : )

No; I was fortunate to be at OU while he was still teaching, and I took his lithics class, but I cannot claim him as a relation.

The CCC properties at the park defined the style now known as National Park Rustic and the brown paint became known as “NPS Brown.”

In the 1930s-1940s the park landscape was redesigned with federal New Deal “make-work” programs, specifically the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)

Sulphur Springs, a 19th century Chickasaw town centered on Pavilion Springs, was relocated to protect the water sources and the property became “Platt National Park” (1906-1976).

The US Department of the Interior acquired “Sulphur Springs Reservation” in 1902 from the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations to protect the natural sulfur and bromide mineral springs and spring fed creeks that were purported to have curative powers.

*is confusing* It is unrealistic to think anyone could ensure a business stays open indefinitely, as they seemed to suggest. Preservation is about communicating what communities deem important from our past into our present-even as those same communities change & grow.

… but we (OK) are definitely making progress. The author’s complaint (?) that preservation laws preserve the physical characteristics of a property rather than the ephemeral I’d confusing and frustrating.

I appreciate you sharing these comments and I agree. In OK we have plenty of room for improvement when it comes to nominating sites to the National Register that reflect the various communities and people in our state…

This has been my trick too. I like to borrow audiobooks from the library (Libby) in addition to a physical or digital copy. I read when I can and then listen when I’m driving or doing monotonous tasks (dishes, laundry, etc)
