#LitHodgepodge Unedited opening paragraph that I rewrote yesterday, but hey, Baltic winter festivals!

Audra and her father were the last ones to the burning of winter. A woman made of straw was set up in the middle of the village. Fire licked at her straw legs, and soon, it would consume her. She was Morė, the ancient heathen goddess of the cold and death. Užgavėnės was the name of the festival, one that was promised to banish winter soon and replace it with spring.
The only sign of spring was a rare sun kissing Audra’s skin, as she and her father entered Dundulis on packed snow in their warmest clothes. Some of the people around Morė were singing and dancing in a circle, accompanied by bagpipes and zithers. The boys her age all wore grotesque masks made of fabric, wood, or old animal skins fashioned in the faces of goats, wolves, or dragons. There were far more people than Audra knew from her village; many must have traveled from the neighboring towns.
