Gloria Steinem wanted our young readers to know this: “The future depends entirely on what each of us does every day; a movement is only people moving.” She was passing the baton. The movement will only continue if all keep moving toward a better future. Rest in Peace & Power. #kazoomagazine

We featured Dolly Parton in our upcoming Brilliant Issue. We want our young readers—girls ages 5-12—to be inspired not only by her success, but also by her generosity and heart.
Dolly Parton’s secret to making her dreams come true: “You can’t sit around and think of all the things you want to do. You’ve got to think of what you want to do, and then you’ve got to get out and make that happen.” From Kazoo magazine no 42, The Brilliant Issue.

We are such fans & so sorry to hear about the loss of Jane Yolen, who wrote a wonderful story for us in which a girl flies off in a hot air balloon. We like to imagine her soaring away to new destinations, now. RIP and thank you for the stories that will live on forever.
An open page from Kazoo magazine:

ARBORA AND THE
AIRSHIP
When an adventure goes aury, a young pilot discovers she has everything it takes to find her way back home again.
By Jane Yolen
Arbora watched her father as he worked on their yellow hot-air balloon. His hands were swift, sure.
The bright afternoon sun glinted off his goggles.
That made the tough cords running from basket to bag seem to glow.
He used a small twister to turn all the final bolts so that nothing would come loose as they sailed. There would be another round of checkups on the "airship," as Papa called it-and then in the early morning. after a good sleep, and a better breakfast, they would be off.
Arbora thought the "airship" was actually more like a war canoe. She'd read about those in her adventure books.
She endlessly studied the photogravure portraits of fierce warriors standing by their large boats.
Papa had told her all about the warriors he'd encountered on his journeys, about their graciousness, their hospitality.
And about their amazing medicines when he'd fallen terribly ill while on one visit.
Papa was signaling he was finished with the checkup by waving the twister at her.
She waited patiently while he clambered down over the side of the basket. —from an original short story by Jane Yolen that appeared in Kazoo magazine 6, The Steampunk Issue, a published in 2018. Illustrations by Maria Tuti. #kidlit #childrensmagazine #janeyolen #kazoomagazine

ABSOLUTELY THRILLED TO HEAR Kazoo played a small part in literary legend Lois Lowry’s new book, Building 903 (out in Sept). We include a short story by in every issue. Lois Lowry’s story appeared in the now-sold-out Kazoo magazine no 26, The Future Issue. So if you have it, it’s a collectible! 🏆
Graphic of Lois Lowry’s interview in Publisher’s weekly.

“ALA 2026: Use Your Imagination: PW Talks with Lois Lowry.

Question: Did you set out to write a commentary on censorship?

——> “A few years ago, a children’s magazine called Kazoo asked me to do a 1500-word story for a young audience. The theme was “the future,” and I wrote about an 11-year-old girl whose elderly neighbor slips her a key to a cache of books. The child has never seen books before, so she shows them to her mother, and they’re very excited. Happy ending! That story lodged in my mind, and I turned it into something much darker and more complex.“

Here’s why Alison Bechdel thinks art is important—and not just for kids, for all of us. 4/5
What one thing helped you become the artist you are today?
I just spent a lot of time drawing. I even drew during school, which often got me in trouble, but it helped me pay attention.

Why is drawing so important?
Making art is a way of getting your inner thoughts and feelings out into the world.
I'm shy, but when my drawings get attention, it makes me feel happy and like I'm not alone. Sharing our inner experiences is one of the most important things we can do, because it keeps us connected with our tribe: other humans.

Here’s Alison Bechdel’s advice for young artists who get frustrated: 3/5
What if a picture doesn't turn out how you'd hoped?
When we draw, we're figuring out how to match the image in our head with the image coming out of our hand. When we succeed, it's easy to love our drawings.
When we don't, it can feel disappointing.

But don't get mad. Treat it kindly. Maybe you'll see a way to fix it or turn it into something else. If you look at it like a fun puzzle to solve, then in the long run, it'll make you better at drawing.

Here’s some of what Alison Bechdel had to say about what she loved to draw as a kid: 2/5
Kazoo talked with cartoonist Alison Bechdel for our Drawing Issue.
Here's some of what she said:
What was your favorite thing to draw as a kid?
Doodle bugs-magical, silly people with polka-dotted wings and droopy antennae.
What do you love to draw most now?
People. When I was little, I'd often draw a single person-an astronaut, a cowboy, a surfer-on a piece of paper. My father would say, 'Look at all that white space you left! You should draw some backgrounds!
So, sometimes I did to humor him, but l was just itching to draw another person. It was good practice. Now as a cartoonist, I have to be able to draw all kinds of things.

"What sort of future are we creating? Is it the kind of future you want to live in? If is isn't, what can we do to create a better future?" -Octavia Butler, who didn't just warn us about the future, but implored us to change it. (From Kazoo magazine #26, The Future Issue, art by Alitha E. Martinez)
An illustration of Octavia Butler saying, "There is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns." With the text: "Her name was Octavia Butler. In her lifetime, she traveled the world and wrote many novels in which she imagined entirely new worlds. She left us with the question she always asked herself: "What sort of future are we creating? Is it the kind of future you want to live in? If it isn't, what can we do to create a better future?" from a comic drawn by artist Alitha E. Martinez for Kazoo magazine #26.
