This collection is extremely useful for sure but I think this map specifically is a great reminder that very similar time series can arise from distinct mechanisms. Degeneracy is such a fascinating phenomenon and perhaps unfortunately for us, ubiquitous in nature.

🚨 8 months after, this paper found its home at Science Advances. We came up with a generative brain network model based on game theory and found that the human brain is suboptimal both in terms of wiring cost and communication efficiency. Here's why: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Allow me to bring this one-paragraph banger of a story by Jorge Luis Borges to your attention, my fellow modelers.

And after a hot (literally and figuratively) #OHBM, we're closing this term's seminar series with a presentation by Claus Hilgetag on Thursday this week. Here's more information + the registration link sites.google.com/view/makingc... Making Connections continues after the summer break. Don't worry.

We're organizing a full-day Neuro-AI workshop at OHBM with a 90-minute-long hands-on session to cover all the nitty-gritty of it. If you're around, come join us. Besides the practical aspects, we have a stellar line-up of speakers to learn from and discuss with: kuffmode.github.io/OHBM2026Neur...

Briefly, we revisit some old assumptions about the human brain's wiring architecture as a product of an optimization problem. We encourage people to see it the other way around: it's more about navigating a constrained landscape of trade-offs than optimizing an objective, e.g., energy efficiency.

For all the esteemed scholars out there who prefer gaining knowledge the correct way, here’s a summary of our upcoming opinion piece, delivered to you by Jesus himself. But seriously, science communication is about to get a lot worse and better at the same time.

We then show why the brain didn’t end up doing the same: computational reliability. Model networks form a centralized “oligarchy” instead of a distributed “rich club” and that makes them fragile. So we found a new trade-off with robustness being even more important than both cost and efficiency.

Our model is simple: each region connects only to maximize its communication capacity given the wiring cost. We show that this gives rise to brain-like architectures but also, under a propagative dynamics, they become even more cost efficient while having comparable computational performance.

I randomly came across an absolute legend who is publishing papers alone, all the way from 2010, without being affiliated with any institutions. I have so many questions, starting with “how does your day look like?”
