I don't have sun by season but I do have winter temps, ig that matches better

I think this basically captures what people are talking about when they mean the Sun belt. Obviously some of these are outliers, but like if you look at the big blobs, you get the southeast, the Texas triangle cities, AZ/NV/CO/UT, and SD/the inland empire

Which does include San Diego and the inland empire, but not Los Angeles itself

Phoenix (core city) is, but Phoenix (the majority of people) was built recently. here's my definition

Tbh the name never really made any sense to me. The southeast is quite gloomy

Here's how I'd define it. SD and the IE are Sunbelt, but LA isn't

This notably has not been working for Los Angeles very well. You can't do this without a good cross city network because people will inevitably end up living apart from work due to other life circumstances (two body problem among others)

This definition is just warm areas? I don't think it corresponds to a meaningful cultural or built environment region

terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 18h
Los Angeles realized this and has been fixing it, but it's taking a while, and starts from a baseline of a population that is very protax
110
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 18h
Ehhhhhh they'll run into the other Los Angeles problem (density doesn't really work without transit)

Like it was mostly developed earlier as a network of streetcar suburbs

Los Angeles is definitely not in the Sunbelt

Crazy how bad Winnipeg's weather is, like if you filter reasonably sized cities by having winters with a really low temperature you get a bunch of stuff on the Eurasian steppe and Winnipeg urbanstats.org/mapper.html?...

🚨 Urban Stats 32.4.0 🚨 I've added population weighted median density as suggested by many, as well as absolute decade over decade changes in density Additionally Luke has added the ability to combine multiple kinds of region / universe in the custom table Also new juxtastat results page!

Average university also does this because the average university is randomly placed in some town of 10 people

Like I'm also in an apprenticeship program type thing (a PhD program) but you do 4 years at a university first to learn everything you can in that context first, which seems obviously more efficient
170
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 20h
There's really no reason you shouldn't be able to learn a trade at a university like a normal skill

Yes but it's a normal job that doesn't cause your body to physically degrade over time

I'm a big advocate of voting where you live, unless you have the option to vote in a swing state or something, which California of course is not

(to be clear not a California voter but at least a half dozen California voters do vote on propositions at least in part based on my voter guide)

This is like if the DSA endorsed against a rent control measure or something

terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
To elaborate, my general feeling on the California yimby orgs is they're a bit too centrist and too likely to support centrist growth machine priorities over left/green urbanist ones. The fact that they're endorsing against a CEQA rollback is uh... fairly strong evidence it is in fact bad
1180
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Every one of the (relatively centrist) california yimby orgs endorsing against or not endorsing prop 45 has definitely shifted my position on this. I need to look into it more but I'm leaning No

The issue with teacher salaries is that the pay isn't competitive with the jobs teachers could otherwise get
2240
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I feel like people underestimate how much teachers make. It's low for a career that you need a master's for, but it's not like, low in absolute terms Like I make the same as the lowest tier Cambridge teacher and about 60% as much as the highest tier one and I'm doing fine living here
2230
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
The part people miss is you're paying them $ridiculous/hr the fact that they're working like 10 billable hours a week. The wage needs to cover client development, driving around, frictional unemployment, etc
090
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
teachers make more than plumbers, for example
110
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Also, a lot of care work makes a lot of money? Teachers and nurses, for example
240
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Plumbers generally do not make that much money, and the work is physically draining. You pay a lot because they can never find steady work so you're paying for all the dead time
150
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
If you're assuming that all white collar work is gone I don't see any reason to assume robots stay terrible
000
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Combo of you need someone who is doing the actual blue collar part of being a doctor and you need someone who is doing the pink collar part of being a doctor. Doctors are the rare trifecta
060
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Oh. I mean like I think in steady state this isn't all that different from having an automated payroll on a certain point. Obviously it'll be really weird for the first part when it's new and kind of sucks
110
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I think this is one of those things like the housing crisis where it will start being politicized and resolved if it ever actually starts encroaching on people with money and/or power
010
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I don't think that this is true, the gig economy has not taken off the way that people were expecting 10 years ago

terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I remember a friend in 2018 or so panicking about a potential medical career because of AI when at present that's looking pretty AI proof in the medium term as well
170
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
In general I feel like people overrate the importance of this (how many careers are actually gone), and also are really bad at predicting what will happen
270
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
My backup job has always been to become a schoolteacher and I'm pretty sure for at least my lifetime this is ~AI proof
0130
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It's honestly very funny that every article is like "ai is automating everything" ends with "so get into blue collar work" and not "so get into care work" when the latter is obviously going to be much socially harder to automate (despite the preferences of sickos like me)
4330
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I do feel like someone should work on the efficiency here, it really sucks that effectively we're just paying for people to be frictionally unemployed a lot
2350
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Like the trades are an area where simultaneously everything is super expensive and people aren't actually making that much money
1210
terra firma, terra eterna 🚱🌉 @kavi.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Honestly I think you're overthinking it. Contracting is a really inefficient industry and is especially expensive in rich areas, a lot of this is just frustration at how expensive it is to get anything done on their house turned into a half-baked political statement
