Looking at today's Active Travel England (@ategov.bsky.social) updated funding allocations, here is the funding per person per year. I think it makes good sense to fund places that put money to best uses, I made this chart shows how that policy play out in practice. www.gov.uk/government/p...

It becomes interesting when you realise that what they mean is ‘I’d rather have a dead kid than an autistic one (for example, though there’s no link!). I think it is weird to prefer anything to the kid you have, honestly! they just need you to love them more than anything in the world. not hard!

Yeah, I hear it is bloated. But I also hear that the French automotive cos are responding to weight-based charging with less bloat and that both Ftench and Italian cos have faced up to the reality of tiny old Mediterranean cities on car size too, which interests me!

Family holidays when I was a kid: Renault 4 plus small trailer for some of the camping gear. we took the trailer off when we didn’t need it, the rest of the year. Using an SUV is like wearing wellies all summer because you potentially have a muddy walk in February

While this BBC article on ever-bigger SUVs is perfectly good, it's absurd the way there has to be quotes from people who insist they could not get around without a vehicle the size of a Sherman tank. It's just bollocks. I'm one of three kids and we were all ferried around in a Vauxhall Astra estate.
'Carspreading' is on the rise - and not everyone is happy about it
But many owners say they are reliant on big cars.

Matt Mansell, a father of three based in Guildford, runs a technology company, as well as a property development business, and says he needs his Land Rover Defender 110 for ferrying around clients and children.

"I need to have enough space to put children in, with all of their kit - also, you can fit a door or a three-metre length of pipe in it," he says.

"It's very much a utility vehicle, but it's presentable."Lucia Barbato, from West Sussex, says her second-hand Lexus RX450 SUV - a hybrid model - is vital for transporting her large family in an area with limited public transport. She runs a marketing agency from home and drives her three sons to the bus stop each day, so they can go to school.

"On a Monday morning with three boys, three school bags, three sports kits, and a trumpet thrown in the boot there isn't even room in the car for the dog!"

i walked with my kids with stage props for a week one summer. Amazing how a long hard rubber sword made a difference - but utterly infuriating

Lovely #Regency car park here. #Hove is known for its stunning car parks that extend monotonously for street after street, abounding with superb heritage features such as blocked sightlines and authentic grey kerbsides prividing the most limited interest for people moving around the area sustainably

@theguardian.com great article on ferritin deficiency but I wish you’d found space to cover ADHD. It’s very typical to have low ferritin with this condition - double whammy for the concentration. People really should get automatic ferritin tests on ADHD diagnosis.

@lrb.co.uk Jackson Lears on The Righteous Community seems to resonate completely with the broken faith-based communities of Hawthorne. A nation of fear and superstition whose sociological transition into the modern world has been cynically stunted by its leaders? Discuss… (sorry so far behind!)

Questions and answers, @lcefuk.bsky.social , questions and answers. Your party is failing on decarbonising a sector that is mired in public health and environmental calamity and inequality, and you just stack failure upon failure, failure in aerospace upon failure in surface transport.

@lcefuk.bsky.social summit looks more than slightly hollow with airport expansion going through. Vision, determination, needed - instead we have a flock of sheep wandering aimlessly towards a climate cliff. Irresponsible and inappropriate and nowhere near governing standard, honestly.

Does it mention the magic wand she’s presumably still searching for to fix traffic problems without noticeably changing anything about the status quo??? what a muppet. Though again what a reflection on the steadfast, determined approach from Sadiq Khan, who’s looking ever more heroic here

disabled cycle users can’t be put in that position so I call discrimination on those plans. By all means permit cycling but it is not 24/7 4- season usable and you know women & disabled people do have work and events and education and many other trips to make after 5.30 pm in the winter.

Please please see @londoncycling.bsky.social ’s Women’s freedom after dark report. this looks and smells to me like a council that just doesn’t want to reallocate road space and thereby shows they actually don’t care about safety after all, ie fob off alert

Can we extent collision reporting improvements to rail incidents? A vehicle didn’t just hit a bridge. A person driving hit the bridge with their vehicle. Drivers matter, right @thameslink.bsky.social ?

Has London shed most of its outer boroughs? They’d like that. If not, though, perhaps the Mayor of the whole of Greater London could kindly get out of the Ivory tower and visit Hillingdon, Harrow, Bromley, Barnet and don’t bother taking a very long tape measure to count the inches of cycle lanes

And walking to things is monumentally satisfying. Further to fiction/Hardy/walked journeys, my flute teacher’s perfect explanation of how to blow was centred on a long walk, ending in your favourite Cotswold town, the favourite pub, the perfect ale, you sit down and *phoooo* that’s it ;0)))

Enjoy the journey, not just the destination! I had a lecture once on the significance of journeys in fiction. I think we were looking at Thomas Hardy (a number of key moments in his plots!) but he’d have cycled anyway - loved riding round Dorset

Disproportionality is key. Of course criminal damage or whatever, but what the government wants us to think is that criminal damage in the name of protest against an evil that many, many people are deeply horrified by is the same as terrorism. That damages the state’s relationship with its citizens.

Face it, if there are no alternatives to using a car, that’s saying that non-drivers can’t expect to live & participate somewhere. Now let’s look at that in discrimination terms. Interesting, huh? I’ll leave everyone to fill in some serious gaps (and check every rural authority too)

What I’m saying is that if someone is worried about access at this bus stop there are bigger issues than the bypass!
030
katycycles.bsky.social @katycycles.bsky.social · 02/07/2025
That looks so unsafe! Cycle users are meant to pull left across the front of the bus where the bus is likely at any moment to pull right across the path of the cycle user - what could possibly go wrong??

I mean stuff the fact that this bus stop, gorgeous though it is with grassy bank, is pretty inaccessible - not much flat access or easy bus ramp access going on there. I don’t think people wheeling get much of a look in in this debate though!

I’m with sharpening up comms around fixing travel by making it healthier and more inclusive. I’m also for pointing out that most of what we campaign for is literally fixing what we broke over the last century. The status quo is literally broken.
