It alludes to, or echoes, the uncertain times we find ourselves in. Quite often, everything feels incomprehensible and strange, as though we’re in the “wrong” version of our world. I believe the book captures that feeling well.

The prose is beautiful, and I loved his descriptions of various landscapes and seascapes. Some paragraphs are incredibly striking and I think will stay with me for a while. This is the sort of book that you should let wash over you, and I did, but I also stubbornly tried to parse it. I couldn’t.

When it comes to dialogue, I got the impression that the author worked some of the random bits of conversation he overheard in real life into the narrative, and that at times, the characters spoke of metaphysical dilemmas he was grappling with.

The writing is atmospheric and gorgeous. I loved the increasing sense of creepiness and wrongness throughout. I had a lot of fun guessing what the mystery was, even though it was kind of obvious, it was still interesting to play around with different theories. I’ll 100% read more of Chidgey! #books
