Credit unions change lives. But too often they are held back by unnecessary red tape and a lack of support. I’ve written for Parliament News about how we can unlock their full potential and why that matters for communities across the country. Read it here: parliamentnews.co.uk/credit-union...

Credit unions could be doing much more if we cut the red tape holding them back and supported them properly | Parliament Politics Magazine
Before I ever had the chance to spend, I was already saving with a credit union.

The Fire Brigades Union were at Westminster this week calling for sustained investment in our fire and rescue services. I met with reps from Lanarkshire, to stand against cuts that put lives at risk such as fewer firefighters, slower response times and the withdrawal of appliances.

One FBU rep wears a black polo shirt with a fire service badge, and the other wears a navy T-shirt with sunglasses hanging from the collar. There is fencing and greenery in the background.

Spoke in Parliament today about the threat to Cumbernauld Fire Station. After responding to major incidents in our town, our fire service deserves investment, not more pressure. I urged the UK Government to press the Scottish Government to act.

I’ve shared my response to the Pathways to Work Green Paper. The current welfare system is not working for too many people. Reform must be fair, person-centred, and rooted in dignity. 📄 Full statement below and at the link here: drive.google.com/file/d/1tOJL...
A letter on official parliamentary letterhead from Katrina Murray MP, dated 27 June 2025, titled "Pathways to Work: Reforming Benefits and Support to Get Britain Working Green Paper – Consultation Submission". It outlines concerns raised during a roundtable with local advice and employability organisations, focusing on flaws in the PIP assessment process and broader failings in the welfare system. The letter calls for a more person-centred, fair, and responsive approach to benefits reform.Page two of Katrina Murray MP’s submission to the Green Paper consultation. It highlights issues including long delays in disability benefit decisions, insufficient investment in Scotland compared to England and Wales, and the cascading risks of removing PIP. It also emphasises the need for holistic support, including a strong health service and fair employment protections.Page three of the Green Paper response from Katrina Murray MP. It raises concerns about tribunal capacity, the strain on advice services, and the lack of a proper impact assessment. It criticises the Green Paper for repeating past policy failures and highlights the risks to devolved services like Adult Disability Payment. The letter calls for well-resourced in-work support and a cultural shift toward treating claimants with dignity and respect.Final page of Katrina Murray MP’s response to the Green Paper. It supports raising the basic rate of Universal Credit but warns this should not be the limit of reform. The letter concludes that the welfare system must be reformed in a way that empowers individuals, respects dignity, and is informed by lived experience. My statement on today’s vote on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. I’ve raised concerns throughout about the lack of safeguards, the impact on vulnerable people, and the absence of funding for implementation. I will be voting against the Bill.
A graphic titled “Statement on Kim Leadbeater’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Private Members Bill”, with a green border and white background. It contains a quote from MP Katrina Murray stating she asked the Health Secretary earlier in the week whether it should be easier to help someone die than to help them live. She highlights concerns about NHS funding for assisted dying services, and notes that the Health Secretary confirmed there is no money allocated for such a service in the Bill. The quote ends with her stating this only strengthens the concerns she has raised throughout. The footer includes Katrina Murray MP’s name and title, with a green parliamentary portcullis symbol.A follow-up graphic also titled “Statement on Kim Leadbeater’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Private Members Bill”, with the same green border and layout. Katrina Murray MP states she has always opposed the Bill, outlining her concerns about the impact on vulnerable people, including those with mental health issues, disabilities, a history of abuse, and terminally ill young people. She criticises the removal of safeguards and the replacement of High Court oversight with a politically appointed Commissioner. She concludes by saying this is not a decision she takes lightly and confirms she will be voting against the Bill today. Her name and title again appear at the bottom alongside the portcullis symbol.

MPs are being asked to vote on a Bill that could reshape the NHS, without seeing the final version. I’ve joined colleagues in calling for more time to scrutinise the End of Life Bill and its impact on vulnerable people. We must get this right.
A photo of a formal letter addressed to the Leader of the House of Commons. The letter expresses concern over the lack of parliamentary time allocated to properly scrutinise the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. It highlights that only 14 percent of MPs have spoken on the Bill, despite over 130 amendments and 64 clauses. The signatories urge the government to ensure further time is provided for debate. The letter is signed by multiple MPs from different parties, with visible signatures at the bottom.A close-up photograph showing the list of MPs who signed the letter regarding the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. The names are printed in a clear list format, representing a cross-party group of signatories. The Assisted Dying Bill returns to Parliament today for its final vote at Report Stage. I’ve raised serious concerns about the lack of safeguards. It should never be easier to die than to live with support. I will be voting against the Bill.
A formal digital statement from Katrina Murray MP titled “Statement on Kim Leadbeater’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Private Members Bill.” The statement explains the MP’s opposition to the Bill due to concerns over inadequate safeguards to protect vulnerable people. It outlines that although MPs were promised the chance to strengthen the Bill during committee stage, many proposed amendments were rejected, and some existing safeguards were removed. Katrina Murray expresses her belief that support to live should be easier to access than assistance to die.
The continuation of Katrina Murray MP’s statement outlining her firm opposition to the Assisted Dying Bill. She lists three key reasons for her decision: removal of High Court oversight, inadequate protections for vulnerable groups, and the ability for doctors to raise assisted dying with under-18s. The statement concludes with her confirmation that she will vote against the Bill and invites constituents to contact her office for further discussion. It ends with her handwritten signature, “Katrina,” and includes her MP branding at the bottom.

Back out this weekend hosting another great coffee morning - this time in Auchinloch! Always good to catch up with constituents and hear your thoughts and concerns. I host these regularly across the constituency, so keep an eye out for where I’ll be next! Thanks to Auchinloch Primary for hosting!

It was a pleasure to visit Red Deer Park Village to spend time with the staff & residents. We had valuable conversations about the issues that matter most to the community. Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with us, for the warm welcome & informative tour of a brilliant facility.

In recent weeks, two major fires hit the constituency, one being a wildfire. Today I asked the Leader of the House to join me in thanking Scottish Fire and Rescue for their service in challenging circumstances. I also called for a debate on wildfires and their link to our changing climate.

Across Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch, young people have started their exams. In Parliament last week, I acknowledged their efforts and asked the Leader of the House for a debate on the importance of educational transitions. Wishing every student the very best!

Today is International Workers' Memorial Day, I recently joined colleagues at Summerlee to remember those who tragically lost their lives at work. We must keep pushing for stronger protections and safer workplaces. Let’s honour the dead by fighting for the living 🕯️

Text reads: "International Workers' Memorial Day, 28th May 2025". At the bottom, there is a purple banner with the UK Parliament logo and the name "Katrina Murray MP, Member of Parliament for Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch".Members of Parliament, Pamela Nash - Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke (to the left of photo in a black dress and red jacket and red shoes) Frank McNally - Coatbridge and Bellshill (in the centre of the photo with a white shirt, red tie and blue suit with black shoes) and Katrina Murray - Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch (to the right of the photo wearing a colourful flower patterned dress and a blue suit jacket with black shoes), stand in front of a black railing.
