America’s balance between national security and press freedom depends on trust
People are drawing a line between restrictions tied to a concrete danger and those that look politically motivated.

Americans overwhelmingly value press freedom. But many also support limits when national security is involved. Our research shows people aren't simply choosing freedom or security. They're making case-by-case judgments that depend heavily on trust. New piece with Michael Lipka in @thehill.com 👇
Screenshot of a published opinion article on The Hill website. The headline reads, “America’s balance between national security and press freedom depends on trust.” The article is authored by Katerina Eva Matsa and Michael Lipka. Below the headline is a photo of a reporter standing outdoors holding a press credential. The article discusses how Americans weigh concerns about national security alongside support for press freedom and the role trust plays in those judgments.

Amid debate over press access to govt, our new survey finds most Americans (73%) say press freedom matters to society — but not unconditionally. 60% say govt should restrict a story that poses a national security risk; far fewer say the same if it's critical of govt or politically slanted.

Americans Value Press Freedom but Differ on Its Limits
Many people in the U.S. say some press freedom restrictions are OK when weighed against concerns about false information or national security.

One thing we’re finding in our research: Many people feel they’re in a constant negotiation with information. Every day we’re asked to decide what to trust, what to ignore, and what deserves our attention. That’s a lot.

How Americans Are Engaged With News, Politics, Religion and Civic Life
Americans’ engagement with others is not one-dimensional. Instead, they sort into four distinct groups that reflect different patterns of participation in society.
010
Kat Matsa @katmatsa.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Some interesting findings: • Young adults engage heavily online but less in traditional civic life • Democrats & Republicans engage in strikingly similar ways • Trust in the federal government is low across ALL groups

New today from @pewresearch.org and the Pew-Knight Initiative: Americans don't split neatly into "engaged" and "disengaged." We found four distinct groups based on how people take part in public life 🧵 @knightfoundation.org

It also connects to something we wrote about recently in @niemanlab.org: local news has long been trusted across party lines, but that may be shifting. www.niemanlab.org/2026/07/a-qu...

A quiet shift in how Americans perceive local news
Local news was a space seemingly insulated from political polarization. That's changing.

Kat Matsa @katmatsa.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
This connection — journalists being present, known, and doing the work on the ground — is one of the most important things local news has going for it. And it's something people deeply value.

A thought from a recent panel on the future of news at the Embassy of Austria 🇦🇹 Our @pewresearch.org research keeps showing this: when people feel their local journalists are genuinely embedded in their community, they rate their local media more positively. 🧵

Local news isn't collapsing overnight. But the space that seemed insulated from the forces fracturing national media may not be as insulated as we thought. Full piece in @niemanlab.org ⬆️

Kat Matsa @katmatsa.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Ties between people and specific local outlets also appear to be weakening. Fewer Americans get local news from traditional newspapers and TV stations. More get it from online forums, Facebook groups, Nextdoor — or directly from local government.
222
Kat Matsa @katmatsa.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Maybe the most striking finding: the share of Americans who say local news outlets are extremely or very important to their community fell 10 points in one year. From 44% to 34%. Especially steep drop among Republicans.
212
Kat Matsa @katmatsa.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
The partisan gap in trust has also widened. 2016: 6-point gap between Republicans and Democrats. Today: 14 points. Still smaller than the gap around national news — but growing.
100
Kat Matsa @katmatsa.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Trust in local news has been slipping. 2016: 82% of U.S. adults said they trusted information from local news organizations. Today: 70%.

Kat Matsa @katmatsa.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
New in @niemanlab.org: A quiet shift in how Americans perceive local news. Local news was long the exception — trusted across party lines, insulated from the polarization reshaping national news. Our @pewresearch.org data suggests that may be changing 🧵 www.niemanlab.org/2026/07/a-qu...

As Politico moves into Australia, our @pewresearch.org survey data show that about half of adults have heard of Politico and 8% say they regularly get news there — with differences by party.
Composite graphic labeled “DATA” summarizing Pew Research Center findings about Politico. Text notes that nearly 20 years after launching in the U.S., about half of Americans have heard of Politico, and that Democrats are more likely than Republicans to use Politico and to trust it as a news source. Two bar charts are shown: one displays awareness of Politico, with about half of U.S. adults saying they have heard of it, higher among Democrats than Republicans and higher among older adults than younger adults; the second shows trust in Politico, with 13% of U.S. adults saying they trust it, including 21% of Democrats and 4% of Republicans. Kat Matsa @katmatsa.bsky.social · 24/02/2026
One data point that adds context: most Americans say they feel confident they’d know steps to take to check a news story — but far fewer say the same about other people. The confidence is there, but it’s uneven.
030
Kat Matsa @katmatsa.bsky.social · 24/02/2026
We talk a lot about “media literacy” — but do people actually experience checking the news as a skill they’ve mastered? What people describe instead often sounds like a stream of everyday judgments, made under uncertainty. That gap feels worth paying attention to.

Kat Matsa @katmatsa.bsky.social · 14/02/2026
One thing I didn’t expect going into this work was how much agreement there is on the importance of “doing your own research,” alongside tension about what that actually involves.
010
Kat Matsa @katmatsa.bsky.social · 14/02/2026
This is actually a good example of the problem our data gets at. “Doing your own research” isn’t one thing. For some people it means checking accuracy or comparing sources; in other contexts it’s used to signal skepticism toward institutions/experts. Different meanings, very different implications.
162
Kat Matsa @katmatsa.bsky.social · 14/02/2026
One thing I keep noticing: “Do your own research” has become a near‑universal norm about the news. But people mean very different things by it — and that difference matters.
