No, in Sweden. I saw zero posts about this from here. I think the only people who might know about this at all here are public transport users, as there was a message in their apps. Apart from that, business as usual, which is driving.

Actually, just plain driving is not safe. Even so-called attentive, careful driving is not safe. There's always potential to kill. It will always scare others away from public space. And the long-term harm is guaranteed, accumulating each time one drives.

Not that the so-called "car-free day" seems to have prevented anyone from driving as far as I can tell, but I also wouldn't call a day where cars are parked instead of moving a "car-free" day. They are still in your face everywhere, taking up space. But we don't even manage a "standing car day".

This! The only reason I commute by bike is because it's the right thing to do (given that walking seems a bit time-intensive). And there's no way to protest against this institutionalised violence, because it'll catch you in the end, this way or another.

My latest piece for The Guardian: In Sweden, previously unthinkable far-right ideas are now comfortably embedded in the mainstream. The past four years were characterised by an astonishing acceptance of ethnonationalist views, xenophobic rhetoric and authoritarian policies often targeting children.

How Sweden lost its soul – and stopped being Sweden | Martin Gelin
In 2022 my country entered a new era of cruelty. It will take more than one election to get the old, tolerant Sweden back, writes Swedish journalist Martin Gelin

I don't see any differentiation in valuing the input - what M Sverige snorts out of their nose is given the same status as the research based information provided by VTI. Wow. And if lobby groups digress completely from the topic to take the chance to bash cyclists, it still goes into the report.

Slowly making my way through the document. It is rather disconcerting that the Transport Agency sorts VTI, and also the police, the prosecutors' office and the Road Administration under "lobby organisations", together with cycling, car owner and truck driver lobby groups.

A real shame. And the more details I read, the more disappointed I get. The underlying attitude is worrying.

The Swedish Transport Agency published their report on how to regulate overtaking of cyclists today - they picked up the idea of a full lane change, but it seems to stay at recommendation level (still have to read, so no final verdict yet ...): www.transportstyrelsen.se/sv/om-oss/pr...

Tack!

Actually, we were more than 50000 people, and 280 organisations were taking part. But sadly, the Swedish media only reported very little about the demonstration.

They make people think that their driving is now "environmentally friendly" and cheaper, so they drive more. Complacency around car dependence and car centrism increases.

Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 19/08/2026
And to be clear, this happens frequently also in conversations with bike advocates. It appears that there's some silent agreement that we cannot even question the concept of private car ownership. How come? I would really like to know.

Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 19/08/2026
It is a bit tiring to be viewed as some radical lunatic when calling out the endless harm done with motor vehicles to everyone, when questioning the self-evidence of private cars in society and asking for an alternative, sustainable society with more justice. Is it not even possible to discuss this?
1149
Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 13/08/2026
Exactly, and in addition we also have to please the car industry with the phrasing of our research questions and projects, otherwise they won't join, and then there won't be any project at all. So it's on their terms, and they get direct public funding or at least publicly funded research.

Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 13/08/2026
Ended up in a discussion on LinkedIn when I suggested to get rid of private cars altogether. I was taken by surprise that there still seem to be people around who apparently genuinely think that their choice of transport mode doesn't affect others. Can this really be a thing?

Drivers frequently neglect glancing over their shoulder before turning. This can be at least partially due to a lack of rule knowledge. Our combined simulator and questionnaire study shows that this endangers especially cyclists and pedestrians: doi.org/10.1016/j.aa...

"Eighty paperless migrants reported since Sweden's 'snitch law' enacted." But we can't have a reporting portal for traffic crimes. Nazis don't care about traffic criminals (drivers).

Verkligen.

Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 28/07/2026

Yeah, sorry. Often enough one doesn't have time or nerves to remember the plate. But even if one has that and a photo of the driver and a witness, they still close the case.
010
Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 27/07/2026
She didn't go to hospital, "only" bruises and some pain. I know about several similar cases. Police don't consider that a problem, apparently.

Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 27/07/2026
That's horrendous. It's so grim, and the helplessness one often feels is devastating.
010
Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 27/07/2026
Yet another cyclist I know got hit with a car so she fell, sustained injuries, her bike may be damaged. Yet again, Swedish police closed the case immediately. This will never show in the Strada crash stats. It teaches drivers that it's okay to hit people. Has anyone of you made similar experiences?

Yes, and then we talk about "saving lives" as if the deaths were a natural thing to occur.

Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 05/07/2026

Unfortunately this is only true for speeds up to maybe 30 km/h. Also, EVs are often heavier.

They don't belong outside of cities either, because a) that will inevitably take them to cities and b) private car driving isn't sustainable in any way anywhere.

That's the worst thing, in a not-so-large town in Sweden, and I really shouldn't complain, considering how other people have it, but I still find that it is very disruptive and invades my peace. I don't think the same level of noise would be tolerated if it came from other sources.
010
Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 27/05/2026
I find the motor vehicle noise all the time and everywhere harder and harder to tolerate, and there's no way to escape. I can't believe that this goes largely unnoticed.

Of course that doesn't say anything without exposure numbers (how many cyclists are there in the different conditions in the first place?), but hi-vis requirements are the wrong approach for so many other reasons.

For sure not just in Sweden, but here the hypocrisy in combination with how fast the shiny surface just crumbles is astounding.

Sweden going down the drain at breathtaking speed. It's bizarre to begin with to connect rights to circumstances of one's birth. And how more and more parties fall over their feet trying to please the fascists makes me sick.

032
Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 21/05/2026

There is no safe driving. It is inherently dangerous. While the risk associated with it can be varied, there is no way to make it safe. And it will always limit other people's freedom.
000
Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 01/05/2026
The fact that they have a car already indicates something. You might want someone on the jury who gets the position of people who don't drive.
010
Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 19/04/2026
000
Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 19/04/2026
101
Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 19/04/2026
111
Katja Kircher @handle.invalid · 19/04/2026
Really? The way you describe it makes it abundantly clear once again that there's no way to make cars "safe". And I think deep down everyone knows this.
