My statement in response to Donald Trump's election-related speech.
Statement from State Senator Kristen Gonzalez: "Donald Trump used his primetime speech to spread conspiracy theories and air grievances of his past losses. He presented no evidence of election interference, but he did show how fragile our democracy can be when authoritarians undermine the rule of law and attempt to discredit the legitimacy of our free and fair elections. His rhetoric is dangerous and the policies he is pushing would disenfranchise millions of people and create an unprecedented surveillance state. We cannot allow this administration to undemocratically grab power and silence the voice of voters."Statement cont..."Trump attacked the legitimacy of mail-in ballots, he threatened to purge voter rolls, and he pushed for strict voter ID laws that have shown to reduce election turnout, especially in Black and brown communities. These attacks are the same old talking points that have failed at the Supreme Court in Watson v RNC, failed via executive order when a federal judge struck key elements of the order down, and failed in Congress who rightly will not pass the SAVE America Act. Congress must continue to stand firm, denounce these lies, and refuse to pass Trump’s election denier bill."Statement cont..."The Constitution gives States the responsibility of administering elections, and this right and duty must continue to be honored by Congress and the courts. As Chair of the New York State Senate Committee on Elections, I have worked hard to protect our election infrastructure and ensure that everyone with the right to vote has the ability to exercise it. The right to vote has been fought for over centuries, and we can’t stop fighting now."

Chatbots shouldn’t claim to be a doctor, lawyer or any other licensed professional. My bill, S7263, stops chatbots from impersonating licensed professions while allowing those bots to still give advice. Here’s a thread on what the bill does/doesn’t do & why it’s important:🧵(1/6)

The Internet & Technology Committee convened today to pass a package of bills, including legislation to protect minors from unsafe features in chatbots and to prevent AI from impersonating certain licensed professionals, including mental healthcare workers.

The Trump administration inherited a better-functioning IRS with better customer service and faster refunds. In one year, it has been dramatically hollowed out. @asteephen.bsky.social warns taxpayers may face longer delays and more mistakes that will cost working families the most.

LOADinG V2 (S7599C) has been signed into law! Earlier this year we celebrated first in the nation labor protections for public sector workers concerned w/ displacement by AI. Now, that includes educators, & guardrails on the use of AI in employment decision making in state agencies & local gov’ts.

Today the @council.nyc.gov passed COPA to add another preservation tool to our toolbox! By giving qualified purchasers a first chance to bid on distressed properties in city enforcement programs, COPA will help level the playing field & stop the cycle of speculation & rising rents.

The world's wealthy liberal democracies looked the other way on FIFA's corruption for years because they didn't think corruption in sports was a big deal or worth addressing, and now find themselves looking at FIFA as a powerful, increasingly-integrated part of the far-right anti-democracy movement.

Trump’s EO to stop states from regulating AI is a direct threat to our safety and to workers, and could put the necessary guardrails we have already started building at risk. NY is stepping up to protect everyday people by passing common sense legislation & it should be signed. story: @politico.com

This is about restricting artistic expression and blocking Americans from accessing diverse cultural and political information. Once the crackdown on free speech here takes hold, he can’t have free speech from other countries coming in.

Elections are the practice of democracy. In the face of fascism, strong and healthy elections are the best tool we have to enact the will of the people. If you can’t respect election results, you are fundamentally incapable of protecting freedom and fighting for our democracy.

This is disturbing from Ezra Klein. Not just because Kirk’s hateful and violent rhetoric is bad on it’s own, but it calls into question what Klein thinks politics is for. Is it for fighting on the internet, or making laws that govern a free and safe society? Kirk did the former, not the latter.

What I find most telling is his hope for “one message.” The benefit of a big-tent national party is you can have several messages delivered by credible messengers designed to appeal most to their audience. Maybe corruption is an effective lens for some people, but there’s no need to stop there.

I thought I was making a clever observation that “crime” is a bad pretense for sending national guard or military troops to domestic locations and instead an implicit provocation of violence and challenge of sovereignty. But then he just says it. So I guess I’m not so clever after all.

I’m sorry, I’m not a military expert so I may be wrong on this. Do we send U.S. troops to other countries to stop crime there? I thought it was a different reason, but again, I could be wrong.

Energy bills are rising nationwide, and Trump and the GOP are to blame. They rolled back clean energy incentives and greenlit an AI surge, pushing costs onto working families and deepening economic & environmental inequality. I break it down in TIME today: time.com/7312151/ener...

The main job of elected officials is legislators who need to use technical and precise language, a context in which these phrases are appropriate, even necessary. This advice may be ok for a PR flack, but it’s not serious. These people are out of their depth, we can’t let them weigh us down.

Fantastic article by Michael Kimmelman. His understanding of the political stakes and social impact of these projects is unparralleled, and his perspective is so needed as we face challenges that need urgent public attention. Of course, I am biased, but it's also nice to read people like the park.

It’s cool that tariffs are acting as a sort of backwards interest rate, balancing inflation with unemployment by making them both worse.

The term for this policy is “squeezing the middle class.” It makes it so that you have to be extremely wealthy to access the open market and keeps people with low-incomes from having economic mobility.

I think a really important aspect is what this feels like for fans in the stadium. We don’t have commentary or replays so the play just stops and we have no idea what’s happening or why. It really takes you out of the experience and completely destroys the momentum of the game.

People are going to try to go toe-to-toe on gerrymandering, a fight they don’t believe in and are bound to lose. The answer is district-less Congressional representation and abolishing the electoral college. You can’t let vestiges of inequity survive and hope to outsmart it later. Just end it.

Side note: I especially hate the “we’re too big to try it here” argument. Scale can be exactly what makes complex programs effective! It also allows for pilots and experimentation that can lead to more insights.

In short, I think it’s a better use of time to seriously consider the benefits of fare free buses and how implementation can maximize them than to undercut the potential by either/or-ing without much empirical evidence.
170
Katie Loeb @katieloeb.bsky.social · 09/07/2025
Fourth: Fares don’t correlate with operating costs. They are revenue that sees users pay higher subsidy for service. Replacing the revenue is hard, but I don’t buy it comes with a de facto service reduction. Is a bus with 1 $3 fare payer more affordably operated than a bus with 40 $0 fare payers?
1130
Katie Loeb @katieloeb.bsky.social · 09/07/2025
Third: Removing fare collection would speed up buses and make service better. Increased ridership may also incentivize investments in bus services that have high impact on the public good. A highly used public good becomes highly valued by the public, even non-users. Think of schools and libraries.

Katie Loeb @katieloeb.bsky.social · 09/07/2025
First: I think the economic impact on bus riders is likely large and I’d like to see analysis of this and contributions to the overall economy. Second: I’m curious how many bus->subway riders there are whose fares may be collected on buses but would otherwise be collected on the subway.

Katie Loeb @katieloeb.bsky.social · 09/07/2025
I’m pretty agnostic of fare-free buses, but the more people try to argue it’s bad the more convinced I am this is one of the best uses of transit dollars. Here are some thoughts I have I don’t think are discussed enough.
