Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 17/06/2025Super plenary talk by @frantecol.bsky.social in the beautiful McEwan Hall today - the huge, long-term experiments she’s running highlight how important a longer term approach can be for getting meaningful data from field-based research 🤯 050
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 15/06/2025Excited to be heading to Edinburgh today for Rhizosphere 6! 🦠🍄🟫🌱 0130

Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 26/12/2024In other “things I learned today” - puff pastry dug out from the freezer with a use by date of 05-01-2021 will puff up when cooked but it does *not* taste good… 040
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 25/12/2024Finding an enormous personalised Toblerone on your pillow is an *excellent* start to Christmas Day… 0260
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 12/12/2024In love with my cosy sparkly mushroom mitts, hand made by @luehea.bsky.social 🤩 - think I got the better end of Christmas mitts-for-mincemeat exchange!! 🥹🎄 1110
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 12/12/2024Some outstanding questions from my (much) younger self remain… 😂 #BES2024 2180
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 06/12/2024Huge congratulations to Nathan Howard on passing his PhD viva yesterday, my first @sheffieldpps.bsky.social PhD student! 🥹 🥳🥂Big thanks to Dave Johnson and @garethphoenix.bsky.social for being excellent examiners and ERC for funding - so happy for you Nathan! 3240
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 28/11/2024It’s that time of the year where I consider quitting my job and just make festive wreaths instead… here is this year’s effort: 1120
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 23/11/2024Made close to a tonne of mincemeat this afternoon… let mince pie season commence!! 160
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 23/11/2024Absolutely LOVE this unbelievably eggcellent painting by #Sheffield artist Daniel Halksworth that just arrived today - cracking! 😁 🍳 040
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 22/11/2024So if you’ve listened to this, you’ll probably be almost as excited as I was this morning to find these popping up! But…. Did they glow??? YES THEY DID!! 🤩🍄 000
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Have had an absolute blast today chatting #fungi for an upcoming episode of Curious Cases for #BBCR4 with @fryrsquared.bsky.social and @daraobriain.bsky.social - can’t wait to hear how it turns out! 🍄🟫🍄🍄🟫🍄 071
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Sort of. He used 13C/15N labelled glycine to trace what was happening and found 13C progressively accumulated in the plant and *decreased* in the fungus as N in the agar increased 🤔 100
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 19/11/2024When Nathan increased the N concentration of the agar, the fungus transferred progressively less N from glycine to the plant! So function of MFRE symbionts is affected by environmental availability of nutrients to plants… just like arbuscular mycorrhizas? 210
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 19/11/2024He found a clear and consistent preference by the fungus for the amino acid glycine, on its own 🥃, in a cocktail 🍹; that fungus just loves glycine! But… 100
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Nathan established an elegant plate-based microcosm approach to offer a choice of labelled N sources to MFRE-plant cultures… 100
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Someone’s enjoying the snow in #Sheffield this morning! Made the right choice travelling down to London last night I reckon 😅 0310
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 12/11/2024At first there didn't appear to be any different in plant C allocation to fungi between PCN treatments 🤔 BUT by 14CO2 labelling only 1 plant in each pair, Emily found AM fungi moved plant C *away* from PCN infected hosts, regardless of the neighbouring plant's PCN status 100
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 12/11/2024She found that where there was a choice, AM fungi allocated more 33P to uninfected plant hosts vs. PCN infected hosts! this was consistent whenever there was a *choice* for the fungi... 100
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 12/11/2024Emily set up mesocosms to explore the impact of Potato Cyst Nematode (PCN) infection on C & nutrient flows across simple mycorrhizal networks (AM). She labelled plant-excluding ingrowth cores within mesocosms with 33P & labelled plants within the 14CO2 & tracked their movement... 110
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 06/02/2024We found diversity of fungal inocula in conjunction with soil nutrient availability determine the benefits derived by plants from diverse fungal symbionts - this is important because it really demonstrates that we just don't know enough about how complex, multi-symbiont scenarios play out! 020
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 06/02/2024We investigated the functional role of AM fungi in the presence and absence of a diverse microbial community, including MFRE, in a common grass (Holcus lanatus). We traced movement of 15N to plants via fungi with access (or not) to organic N 140
Katie Field @katiefield4.bsky.social · 27/01/2024A Saturday mycorrhizal treat - I'm so pleased to share our latest findings from our research into the interactions between plants, mycorrhizal fungi and parasitic nematodes in @NatureComms, open access link to the article here: rdcu.be/dw3NU 49936
