The UK will experience a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday 12 August. The extent of the Sun's coverage and the timing of maximum obscuration will differ across the country. Never look directly at the sun; use a pinhole projector or certified eclipse glasses to view it.
Map on UK showing how much of the sun will be obscured by the moon, at maximum, during the solar eclipse on Wednesday 12th of August. this ranges from 88% in the east to 98% in the southwest.

I understand that funding bodies want to go all in on AI as the shiny new innovation thing. But if all the grants start going to AI at the expense of everything else then the research sector is going to end up looking like a farm with dozens of threshers hacking away in a field with no wheat.

Even if this decision is reversed—and, to be clear, it should be—the time and energy taken to convince politicians and funding agencies to do so should have been spent doing actual science. Best-case scenario we're back to where we were before. And then what? Another proposed cut next year?

What UKRI calls a "prioritisation exercise" is, in fact, a massive butchery. Don't trust their numbers (in particular the idea that PPAN is only cut by 2.7%...); they are hiding the sad reality: entire projects are defunded. Some are brutally cut. Science will suffer from it. So will the UK.🧪🔭

Like many colleagues across our community, I’m dismayed by these cuts. The UK should be building on its scientific strengths, not retreating from them, especially as a new government and new science minister seek to define the country’s future ambitions.

This (and the news about other STFC cuts) is terrible news. It's really upsetting that fundermental interesting important science is being cast aside in favour of AI & applied science. One hopes that this is a challenge to central gov to think again & properly fiscally support UK Astronomy
