Continually aggravated by systems that have a dark mode setting marked 'use system settings' but don't activate it as the default. If you know that's an option then use it!

A pet peeve of mine is systems that email you a link to log in. It's not always convenient - especially if I'm using a shared inbox - and I find it weirdly patronising. I can remember a password, people! It also annoys me extra because I know it's irrational and hating new things makes me feel old.

Quick reshare of the OSF news from our team account. As indicated, I'm not entirely doom and gloom about a more focused OSF. But also hoping this isn't disrupting research practices too heavily: it takes time and effort to do open research well, and re-thinking workflows is tough.

Every now and again I am sharply reminded of all the pitfalls of applying for open access funding. Even mainstream read and publish deals are all “Beware your email address, my son! Hybrid-only deals, a clause with catch! Beware the affiliation- fail, and shun, the corresponding-author-gaffe”.

Spent the last couple of days at the #copimconference and reflecting on the range of personal and disciplinary perspectives represented. Leads to a mix of: “I can take this away and use it”, “I’m enjoying this discussion“ and “I don’t know what to do with this yet”. All are good in their own way.

Final part of my cross-platform trilogy, assuming I don't discover new options! I rarely use the lifts, unless I have heavy baggage. But for completeness (double lifts replacing the double stairs, both lifts starting at ground level, one needing to travel to meet me) it's a respectable 2:20.

Katie Fraser @katie-fraser.bsky.social · 14/01/2026
My station route test part 2 has surprising results. Same start and end points but using the stairs (into car park, up main stairs, across bridge, down platform stairs) comes in at 1:57. I did not expect such a significant time saving over route test part 1.

Katie Fraser @katie-fraser.bsky.social · 13/01/2026
Because I like to KNOW, I am testing the fastest route to the far platform at my local station. From the underpass entrance to the far platform (underpass, slope, another slope, down the stairs) is 2:36. At a reasonably brisk pace, considering it's not yet 07:30.
