"If we get this right, it will be the most important thing we have done in this Bill - but, at the moment, there is no measurement,” said Lord Gus O’Donnell in yesterday’s Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill debate. 🔗 www.ourwellbeingourvoice.org 🎥 Watch his speech below 👇

On the long trek home from #BERA2025 & thought I'd share highlights from the week: 1. Presenting preliminary findings from my review about how the school teens go to & the neighbourhood they live in can influence mental health & wellbeing - bonus, I snuck in references to Harry Potter & Neighbours😊

Great 1st day at #bera2025. Particularly enjoyed listening to Karen Fox and a group of Y7s who shared their co-creation experiences - including renaming some of our ‘boring’ research words. No more data collection, it’s now ways of discovery!

Interesting piece in @schoolsweek.bsky.social on the role of the school environment in students mental health. Next week I'll be sharing preliminary findings from a review about this at #BERA2025 looking at what we know & where we need more evidence before making changes. tinyurl.com/5bmy48d8

Our education system is only making mental health worse
Recent government interventions are welcome, but we're only papering over the cracks without meaningful school reform

LGBTQ+ young people in the UK face a severe, unequal mental health crisis. Services like Free2Talk offer life-changing, cost-effective help, but they need greater support. 1/7 pbe.co.uk/publications...

Sure Start centres saved UK government £2 for every £1 spent, study finds
New Labour initiative created ‘remarkably long-lasting’ health and education improvements, says report Sure Start children’s centres provided £2 of savings for every £1 in costs, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), prompting calls for the government to look at such services as potentially paying for themselves. The centres, championed by the last Labour government, created £2.8bn in savings and revenues at the scheme’s peak in England, according to the IFS study. Continue reading...

In 2022, 197,000 young people left secondary school with low wellbeing—equivalent to six children in every class. The Children’s Wellbeing & Schools Bill is a welcome step, but measuring wellbeing nationally could provide the evidence we need to support them better.
