something i'll point out for, uh, no reason whatsoever, is that fewer than 10% of current federal dems were serving as federal dems in 1994

A bunch of Boomers who became sexually active before HIV came on the scene and thus didn't sit through health class with the YOU ARE GOING TO DIE IF YOU HAVE SEX/DON'T PRACTICE SAFE SEX human sexuality unit. Once pregnancy is off the table, no worries.

We absolutely should be horrified by reports of planned public executions and see them as an overt re-embrace of spectacle lynchings--while also understanding that the story of the "modern" death penalty in this country is inextricable from that history, rooted in racial violence & white supremacy.

We cannot afford purity politics of disagreeing over the **finer points** of a healthcare plan or tax reform that is going to look entirely different if and when it and if it gets through Congress.

I understand why people were really frustrated with being told the economy was good in 2024. But, I worked in workforce development. There was so much opportunity and work to build on to really make substantial shifts. And people threw it all away because of some egg price-fixing and racism.

Saying you "held your nose" to vote for Biden is not a flex. Blaming Biden for Trump 2.0 is shifting blame from my fellow whites. If you think Biden was some kind of last-ditch second-to-worst-case scenario after living thru Trump 1.0, then you've been smoked by Russian propaganda.

This is really important to remember for the fraud accusations (the far more likely course of casting doubt on the validity of the results). If the counts for the down ballot races and initiatives is valid, the count for the federal races is likely good to.
000
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I guess that is the other thing. Seizing the ballots to cast doubt on the count is very different from seizing the ballots to prevent their count.
010
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
4) There are very few, if any, of these counties that have ballots with *just* federal elections. There are state and local races, ballot initiatives, propositions, bonds, and levies. So a lot of people have interests in making sure the vote is counted for *their* line on the ballot.
100
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
3) And, in many of those places, the security around collected ballots is literally casino security robust. Multiple levels of verification, etc. to get to them.
110
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
2) Many if not most of those key locations have early voting and mail-in voting. Which means there is not one point in time to intercept ballots or disrupt voting but a month or more of ballot collection and counting.
100
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
1) We have ~3,000 counties independently administering elections. That is ~3,000 county election authorities to target and many, many more polling locations. Even targeting key ones takes a lot of goons.

Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Do I think Trump will try to direct physical interference in the elections? Yes. Do I think it will be effective? I don't know but there are several protective factors that I think we should be aware of in addition to making it too big to rig:

Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
States that have election-day, in-person only voting are the most vulnerable. But those are also the most red.

Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
And I know that the team that collect ballots drive rental vehicles, change who is driving with whom and who is picking up with boxes and alter their routes daily so they aren't readily predictable. Like it is a whole Oceans 11 kind of operation.

Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Riverside, CA? Okay, but they have to seize ballots over the course of a month. Ballots already went out. And I assume that Riverside's election center is like ours, which was designed by a casino security firm and it requires like 3 verification steps to even get access to the ballots.
220
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Messing with the ballots and attempting to invalidate the elections doesn't just have implications for the federal elections and there are a lot of competing interests: people who may be aligned with Trump more generally but have a strong interest in the local election happening.
000
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
One of the most protective things against this is that there is not just one race or even just federal races on the ballot. My ballot has 17 races and 3 statewide initiatives. Surrounding areas also have municipal props, school district and special purpose district bonds/levies
110
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Even then, the count often happens onsite -- the scantron ballots and reader on site at the poll-- and transmitted to the county election authority separate from the physical ballots, which are retained for auditing and recount purposes.
110
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
The ballots don't go to your state capital, they go to your county election authority. In several states, they are being collected and counted for *weeks* so there isn't one point to seize them like in states where the polls are open on Tuesday and they all travel from polls to election authority.
120
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Look, I am not saying there is no danger of *something* happening. But something *effective* is very small subset of something. They don't have enough goons to seize enough ballots in enough places. We don't just have elections in 50 states. We have elections administered by ~3,000 counties.

As a Catholic, like Alito, I think it's so important for you to know how little—how absolutely not at all—your marriage (or your LGBTQ identity) impacts my religious liberty. In fact, refusing to acknowledge your marriage (or your LGBTQ identity) is a grave affront to your innate human dignity.

That is how I did the quasi-obligatory March Madness bracket: - How do I feel about the team's mascot/colors? - Do I have beef with that institution for any reason? - Do I have any sense that university has ever been good at basketball? I did terribly. But it was much more fun.

Twenty-seven years ago this week, a 21-year-old college student named Matthew Shepard was found tied to a fence outside Laramie, Wyoming. He died six days later simply because he was gay. More of his story in the Alt-Text:
On October 6, 1998, Matt left a bar with two men who lured him out under false pretenses. They drove him to a remote area, brutally attacked him, robbed him, tied him to a fence, and left him alone in the freezing night.

Eighteen hours later, a cyclist found him - at first thinking he was a scarecrow.

Matt’s parents, Judy and Dennis Shepard, were overseas when they got the call. By the time they reached the hospital in Colorado, Matt was in a coma. He never regained consciousness. They never got to say goodbye.

Dennis once said Matt was almost too tender-hearted - the kind of person who couldn’t even step on a bug. Friends described him as a “light of joy,” someone who never met a stranger. The night he left that bar, he’d been planning an LGBTQ awareness event at his university.

Years later, Judy Shepard shared that she truly believed by now, things would be different - that people would be safe, equal, and accepted. “I am frustrated that we’re not done,” she said. “I am ecstatic that we have come this far. But there’s just so much left to do.”

And she’s right.

Hate crimes still happen. Basic rights are still being denied.

Let’s honor Matthew’s memory not only by remembering his story, but by continuing the work. By refusing to look away. By choosing compassion over hate, and courage over silence.

It amazes me that people still respond like this. Have they not seen so. many. people. get called out for "don't alienate your allies". It is a threat. It is part of the very dynamic at issue: Be nice to me, give me what I want, center my ego or I will enable violence against you.

God, the early 2000 neocons 🤮 I was going to say that a Gore win would have possibly humbled them but they are incapable. But possibly taken the edge off their worst impulses. I just have a hard time believing that we could have gone into a 2nd* full blow war if the had to wait until 2005.

And Christian Zionism is the bigger, nastier brother of Jewish Zionism and where, in fact, the power and money actually lies in this country. It is a literal death cult that **you cannot** pressure, influence, or shame.

Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
If it was just about the insufferable moral superiority... okay. I am a big girl. But I had these folks (more Morello specifically) call me a genocide supporter because I tried to explain Christian Zionism and how they would be in charge of ME policy in a Trump presidency.
240
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
But there is a really good chance that 9/11 wouldn't have happened with Gore.
110
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Of course. I am going with the butterfly theory. A lot of the fundamentals in 2004 would have been different if Gore had won in 2000. I don't know if anyone but Bush could have taken us into Iraq because no one else would have wanted to. Daddy issues.
120
Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Oh, 18 year old me is still angry about that. I lived in a swing state and almost fell for it but my dad said, it is going to be Bush or Gore, don't throw your vote away. Imagine a court without Roberts and Alito. Even it if it was Merrick Garlands, we would have Roe and not Kavanaugh stops.

That exact same moral question and in good faith came to the inextricable conclusion that they had to vote for Harris. “You’ve got to fight the fascists every which way you can.” You know, except vote strategically for Tom.

Kathleen @kathleencarson.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
There are a million ways to deal with that question that re-orient it to a forward-facing and definitely not holier-than-thou. That's my problem with it. I am not even asking for a hairshirt and ashes (thought I think that is merited) just a little humility that other people looked at+
