The Loeb foundation is pretty open-ended about what it will fund. Funded in dollars but I don't think it's only for Americans. (This is only useful if your research is something ancient though.)

Bathroom in the UK typically means (brace yourself) a room with a bath in it. May not have a toilet in it. We also have "shower room".

Second week on strike with UCU Edinburgh. We will be on strike for five weeks - taking out the entire first half of term, up to the first assessments - but we could be back in the classroom tomorrow if management withdrew the threat of compulsory redundancies.

I think my brain does "making points" and "structuring the argument" in two different stages tbh! Get the material down and come back later.

Katherine McDonald @katherinemcdon.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Depends at what stage. If it's that the ideas in my head aren't making it onto paper coherently, then probably write down what I'm thinking in bullet points / as simply as possible, so I can come back to it later to make it make sense but not forget the main points.

This. And while we're on the subject I'll repeat my plea to permanent academics that they update their own pages. Writing job apps that fit a department profile is so much easier if you know what other people are *currently* working on.

Work on the assumption that your institutional website will either (a) delete you without trace the day you leave or (b) somehow keep implying you work there forever, give people a non-functional email address to contact you on, and never update your achievements past 2015.

My only method now is to book the first slot of the day and go in the back entrance of the museum to get there first. There have been exhibitions with lovely soundscapes and things, which you can't hear if the place is packed!
