One of my first reads of the year is a little anthology called Rough Seas & Strange Yarns, co-edited by my good friend @uteorgassa.bsky.social, comprised of members of her group, Pen & Pier. You can find the book here: www.amazon.com/Rough-Seas-S... 1/🧵
The cover of Rough Seas & Strange Yarns: A Pen & Pier Anthology. It shows a sea, with waves crashing upon rocks and gentle lapping against sad, seemingly a composite of two pictures so that the sand is at the top of the cover, and the crashing waves at the bottom. The spray from the waves is superimposed over a golden yellow background that looks almost like the golden hues of an ale. In the upper-middle area of the cover, the title appears in bold white letters. At the bottom is the subtitle, and shows that it's edited by Ute Orgassa, Michelle Dornish, and Katherine Bonn.

Building on past lessons I’ve given outdoors, on Nov. 17 I’ll teach an indoor lesson on smartphone photography at Fieldwork in Atascadero, CA. We’ll look at settings, focus, exposure, lighting, and composition with phone cameras. RSVP and learn more at www.fieldworkart.org #smartphonephotography
An ad promoting the event, with a sample photo of myself teaching in the field and a monochrome example of my dramatic landscape work. 6pm Nov. 17, 2025, at Fieldwork www.fieldworkart.org.

As I learn to take better portraits photos, I've started reviewing old work. Came across this pic of a jumping spider who posed for me last January. I've also ordered new lights and rearranged my home studio to get better portraits of humans. #macro #photography #macrophotography #wildlife #spider
Close-up photo of the face of a male jumping spider. His legs are gray and black, and slightly out of focus due to the extremely shallow depth of field. His orange abdomen is visible, as are the specular highlights in this eyes and the tiny whiskers on his face.

Not often does the sky parallel the water. But as Pismo Creek emptied into the Pacific Ocean one evening, I caught the clouds at a good angle to reflect the water, figuratively, and the water to reflect the sky, literally.

Solheimajokull Glacier, southern Iceland. I recently came back from a hiking trip in this otherworldly landscape. Look closely and you'll see the people walking its frozen slopes.

A little iPhone astrophotography: The galaxy looms over Sequoia National Park early one frigid morning in early May 2022. I took many photos before getting the composition, exposure, and focus to work. The quality’s not professional grade, but I enjoyed the challenge.

Landscapes and seascapes are easy photos at Pismo Pier. What if we explored shadows and highlights? Slats provided striking contrast on a bright December afternoon.

The beach sand was just damp enough to leave inch-tall hoodoos after a truck pushed dunes away from a walkway. Amazing details appear in surprising places.
