How long are these crepuscular rays? Under clear skies with slight haze hugging the ground, and enough distance between you and the horizon, shadows from clouds over the horizon loom long right after sunset … but only for a few minutes. I caught these the other night at Grover Beach, CA.

What do you see at the beach after dark? I took my camera to Grover Beach after sunset, and the skies didn't disappoint. The boardwalk along the dunes led to spectacular colors as the night drew on, and every few minutes revealed something new. Want to take a walk? wayfinderhikes.com

You never know what you’ll find when you go out. I went out to catch a sunset, but the real show began after dark. The sun wore a hat. Venus trailed a crescent moon. A fire dancer performed to music, streaking flames in viciously graceful arcs. Grover Beach was a great place to spend the evening.

This morning I took a group to the top of Ontario Ridge and back, following trails around the Secret Garden in Avila Beach. This is becoming one of my go-to routes for groups. September is usually the warmest time of year here, which is why I planned this as a morning hike. #centralcoast #hiking

Playing “what if?” yesterday, I photographed the beach at dusk in infrared. Photos set to 2, 5, and 10 second exposures gave me dark, grainy seascapes. To my surprise, the biggest problem wasn’t the dark, but that the dark kept me from focusing properly.

Practice makes progress. Learning to mix hues, use water, and create recognizable scenes is easier when I remove a few variables. So I’m repeating the same subject and format, but with variations, to practice. After bookmarks, who knows? Gift cards, anyone? But first, the basics.

Many of the illustrations I make are based on real-world scenes, like this piece I’m working on. Starting with a photo of Morro Rock on a hazy evening, I traced the general shapes as vectors, chose complimentary colors, refined them all, and added a stylized “sticker” shape. Just a little fun.

Learning to shoot portrait photos, I had the chance to collaborate with marketing expert and poet Sabrina, whose book *Calico* comes out later this year. My takeaway: Seeing good lighting in an interesting location, and deliberately setting up lights and poses, are two different skillsets.

This weekend I was lucky enough to catch a Vandenburg rocket launch from the top of Cave Landing, between Shell Beach and Avila Beach, CA. Shot with my iPhone 17 Pro because I didn’t have my Canon at the time. It was an impromptu stop, just to enjoy the evening. You never know unless you go.

Yesterday I led a group of 19 up the Bob Jones and Sycamore trails, about four miles out & back on a beautiful summer day. About half the hikers stopped at the Secret Garden for brunch. The rest of us enjoyed the pleasant walk back. What a great way to start the weekend.
