IMO it's ironic that the base layer of genAI tech is actually still really bad at number-crunching specifically. When AI is "doing impressive calculations" it's outsourcing the math or straight up getting lucky. LLMs are just tricked out state machines, they don't know shit about numbers lmao

I am done with this shit. It is over. The state of engineering right now is horrible. It has been half a month since I started a new role at a big company.
Nobody knows anything here. The specs, code, tests, PRDs, tickets, resolution of those tickets, reports, etc., everything is made by Claude Code.
Nobody on my team likes this. They are being forced to ship as much as they can. I have heard multiple times from higher management that pushing code is not a bottleneck, so why are we slow?

As a creative person, I find the eagerness of the average person to not just leave rote calculation to machines, but to also abdicate their abstract creative reasoning capacity to a program trained to pretend to think, extremely distressing. Maybe most people genuinely can't tell the difference.

Other people have said this in the comments of the original thread, but software engineering is like any other discipline that requires creative reasoning within constraints. Claiming there is a legitimate use case for LLMs in coding is to claim that the creative reasoning itself is outsourceable.

That is literally what they are trained to do. We do not, have never, and will never have the capacity to make the underlying technology itself "tell the truth." If we manage that with future ML tools, it will be because there are classical engineering solutions sitting above and below the model.

And you can't even ask the LLM follow-up questions for which you can trust the answers, because as has been well-documented in literally every other arena where LLMs have been deployed, these models are laser-tuned to *seem* like they are giving you correct or at least believable answers.

I'm not even a professional software engineer, but I've done enough to know that the hard part is absolutely *not* writing the code, but reasoning through what the code is doing. That's still the case even when LLMs are involved, and is in fact *harder* when you aren't writing the code yourself.

There's a difference between "this ML model implemented a boilerplate function I wrote the signature for and then I proofread it and tested it" and "I fed this LLM a design doc and after a couple rounds of instruction it gave me a completed thing with bunk tests I immediately shipped".
