The Conservative-led town council, in contrast to Tory government of the day (which had condemned them), welcomed and provided hospitality to the marchers as well as officials of the Leeds trades union movement After they were fed, Leeds Trades Council provided marchers with shelter for the night

Once the marchers had reached Leeds from Harrogate, they received a grand feast with full waiter service and white table cloths.

I've worked with Jarrow Forward and Community Foundation North East to bring this fund and will be part of the local panel considering applications. Ninety years after the Jarrow marchers demanded a better future, I'm determined to make sure the next generation gets the opportunities they deserve.

Ellen spoke inspirationally at the public meeting, highlighting the resilience of her constituency; ‘I know that the authorities are getting very tired of Jarrow. They are going to be even more tired of the name before we have finished’.

Ellen Wilkinson MP, having returned from the Labour conference in Edinburgh, joined march leaders and the Mayor of Jarrow at the public meeting in Harrogate. Here, the Mayor paid tribute to Jarrow’s shipyard, noting how vital its contribution was to the war effort.

It was great to chat with Kaz, Sienna and Toby from Bite Back 2030 at this year’s Labour Party Conference about the challenges young people face when it comes to accessing healthy, affordable food. I join their calls to ensure everyone can access nutritious food, regardless of their circumstances.

Community values and a sense of belonging were fundamental to the marchers’ commitment to the crusade. Before the Crusaders left Ripon, the Bishop held a service in the Cathedral which the Mayor of Jarrow and town councillors attended. Marchers were left to rest for the remainder of 11th October.

Today we remember the great Thomas Hepburn, leader of the first miners’ trade union & hero of the trade union movement. A wreath was laid on my behalf at the Miners’ lampstone in Wardley & and the Thomas Hepburn gravestone at St Mary’s Church in Heworth earlier today.

The Mayor of Ripon praised marchers on their arrival in North Yorkshire, showing how their activism raised awareness of hardship in Jarrow and other post-industrial towns. The Jarrow Crusade inspired protests in the North East. On October 10th, 4,000 individuals demonstrated against the Means Test.

Despite the downpour that ensued on the 9th of October, Crusaders continued on their trek from Northallerton to Ripon. That same day, the BBC announced plans to begin regular broadcasts, ushering in a new era of broadcasting that would help preserve the story of the Crusade for future generations.

I support Single Homeless Project and Solace's #MakeWomenCount campaign, calling for the Women’s Rough Sleeping Census to be rolled out nationally from 2027 Too often, women experiencing rough sleeping are hidden from official statistics because they are forced to stay out of sight #MakeWomenCount

Whilst there was no official reception in Northallerton, Councillor David Riley, chair of the Jarrow Council and the Marshall of the March, noted how a sense of community spanned across Northern districts. The people of Northallerton welcomed marchers as though they were familiar acquaintances.

This week marked 90 years since 200 men gathered at Christ Church in Grange Road before leaving Jarrow Town Hall on their 300-mile march to London. I have had the privilege of marking this special anniversary & seeing just how deeply the story of the Crusade is ingrained in the history of our town

That means investing in this essential public service & addressing the underlying problems rather than relying on further job cuts. I will be raising these concerns with Royal Mail's leadership & calling on our Govt to intervene to save our vital national institution

Kate Osborne MP @kateosbornemp.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Workers and our communities should not be made to pay the price for these failures. We need urgent action to strengthen Royal Mail, protect decent jobs and ensure fair competition across the postal sector.
130
Kate Osborne MP @kateosbornemp.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
The loss of up to 2,500 jobs is yet another deeply worrying example of Royal Mail deliberately running down our vital postal service, a service weakened by years of cuts, failed management decisions, Tory government failures, Ofcom inaction and the refusal to tackle the gig economy.

On the third day of the Jarrow Crusade, the marchers left Ferryhill with 120 pounds of cherry cake, donated to the cause by the Miners’ Institute. That evening, when the crusade reached Darlington, the streets of the market town were filled with cheering audiences.

That is the message I want us to carry into the next 90 years. Our communities do not want nor need managed decline; they want and need hope, secure and unionised jobs, properly funded public services, public ownership, investment, and a fairer distribution of wealth and power.

Kate Osborne MP @kateosbornemp.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
They did not win everything they demanded when they arrived in London, but their action became one of the great symbols of working-class resistance because they refused to accept that the fate of their community had already been decided by somebody else.

Great to speak with BBC Radio Newcastle about the importance of Government investment in North East industry There’s a powerful link to the Jarrow March too. Ninety years on, the message remains the same - our region deserves investment, opportunity and a fair chance to thrive.

I’ll keep making the case for this investment to come directly to Jarrow, Hebburn and the wider North East.

Ninety years ago today, 200 men left Jarrow and marched to London demanding work and a future for their town, and there could be no more fitting legacy than seeing a new generation build that future here.
