The media's dilemma: should we cover that a guy contemplating how to dispose of Jews is cited by the VP as an intellectual influence or write another piece about vague connections between Democrats and Hassan Piker? 🤔

Ok yeah it’s satire but it also scares the pants off me. A thiel acolyte and musk shaping the biggest part of our federal government. And they’ve got aspirations that go beyond simply lining their pockets.

I’m no professional social scientist, but when I ask actual students what frustrates them about higher ed: its price, esp given its degrading product (adjuncts, asynchronous online classes, unavailable profs). Which seems to me you ought to invest in more teachers. But what do I know.

I don’t think I’ll ever get over the fact that our ideology never had a problem with organized capital (see, eg, every hedge fund, private equity fund, institutional investor) but begins to clutch its pearls when we suggest we ought to have organized labor, too.

I’m preeeeety sure the whole voucher/school choice thing is a result of school desegregation and the right keeps trying to find new ways to argue “we’re not being racist when we demand our own special white schools”

one of the things MAGA did to Ohio professors was to force them to put their syllabi online for public consumption. To be digested by an AI deployed by TPUSA I presume. We also get in deep trouble if you have an alternate “real” syllabus that is different from what’s out for public consumption.

Yeah one of the things MAGA did to Ohio was to force every professor in a public university to put their syllabi online. To be digested by an AI deployed by TPUSA I presume

The death penalty is a moral abomination. State-sanctioned barbarism pushed by incompetent morons and sanctioned by the Supreme Court. Absolute ghoul shit. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
The lone woman on Tennessee's death row was still alive after she was administered two lethal injections, her lawyer said in a motion seeking to halt her execution Wednesday night, a stunning development after the Supreme Court had stepped in to allow the state to put her to death.
At 8:26 p.m. local time, witnesses said
"executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," her lawyers said in a federal court filing.
They said Pike "has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat," and that curtains to the death chamber "have gone down twice."

I know JD Vance has claimed a monopoly on being the “oracle” of Appalachia. But let me tell you, we have lots of actually-from-Appalachia students at U Cincinnati Law School. And the takeaway *they* got was “do the right thing” and “lift up the people behind you.” Not “don’t be an entitled loser.”

It is broken. And I do not know how to fix it other than by fixing the political economy of the university system. Open source journals help, but do not go far enough.

Kate Jackson @katejackson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
This on top of the fact that the authors, editors and peer reviewers do NOT share the profits generated by the publisher.
120
Kate Jackson @katejackson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Enter AI. Journal editors (also largely unpaid academics) are now forced to do MORE work as they filter out the slop and deal with plagiarism. Meanwhile, creators have their content are expropriated.
130
Kate Jackson @katejackson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The result is predictable: peer review publication takes longer and longer. It's harder to find peer reviewers. As a result, tenure-track faculty who need pubs to get am (increasingly rare) full-time job are pressed.
130
Kate Jackson @katejackson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
This is the messed-up baseline. Academics are now pressed for time more and more as universities fail to replace those who leave. As full-time jobs are replaced by gigwork (adjuncts). As salaries stagnate and professors find side-gigs to pay the rent.
120
Kate Jackson @katejackson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Kvetching about peer review: The business model was always sketchy. For-profit publishers receive free content from academics. This content is peer-reviewed for free by other academics. They sell the product (at v high prices) back to the Universities that pay the academics.

the bossism thesis is consistent with a lot of corporate gov/management moves that some in tech have been making. Eg eliminating any institutions that could tell a founder “no” (from compliance and safety folks to institutional investors to independent board members). They all want to be technokings

You may not love shareholders (though you may be one). But maybe you might love providing friction in the face of arbitrary economic power. Especially the kind that doesn’t mind making deals with fascists.

These changes made it easier to cartelize and concentrate business. And …. It helped make sure the big industrials were on-board with that whole… Nazi thing. Neuman called the leaders of these new Nazi-era monopolies and combines “condottiere.”
131
Kate Jackson @katejackson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The Nazis also eviscerated shareholder rights back in 1937. They also let public corps transform themselves to partnerships and LLCs (like our current contractification of corporate law?!)
122
Kate Jackson @katejackson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I’m no fan of shareholder primacy (at least as it’s been interpreted and applied as an ideology favoring short term decision-making that jukes up stock prices). But.
120
Kate Jackson @katejackson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
In corporate-law-land, there’s a lot of chatter about the SEC’s proposal to rescind rule 14a-8 - a rule that facilitated shareholder petitions to change company governance This is the latest in a trend to eviscerate shareholder rights. See eg TX’s new corp law, controlling shareholder rights etc

It costs more to produce than it saves. Those costs are only growing. They pray the coming messiah/superintelligence will come and tell them how to make it profitable. No one can put a dollar figure on ROI. It’s financed by a Ponzi scheme and implied government bailout.

Kate Jackson @katejackson.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
There’s a weird political theology going on with AI The insiders know the business case for their project is iffy at best. Their only hope is to be “saved” via IPO The ideology likewise captures the rapture: just get to AGI and we’ll be saved In the interim we all suffer the apocalyptic horsemen

!!!!! I keep thinking of the Oresteia in reverse, how we started at the (rational bureaucratic democratic) rule of law and slid backwards into might-makes-right and mafioso justice. How neoliberalism hollowed out everything and left behind only a throne.
