Thanks to you and Jinxe for stepping in! I have read nothing. But work is going better, so yay. I completed most of my Summer TBR cleanse challenge. So I started a Fall challenge. We'll see how that goes. I tend to slow down reading when school starts, then get back to it at the holidays.

Lots of life stuff happened, so not much reading. I started The Shepherd's Crown. I had to be in the right mindset to read it. And I will probably cry.

Still reading History in Six Glasses and Vanished Birds. Also started The Amberglow Candy Store. It's a store run by a fox spirit who sometimes sells to humans if they can find the store, but the candy comes with warnings. Pretty light-hearted. Doing a buddy read with the youngest.

Does your kiddo have OT? Sometimes they are a good source for wiggle seats, the kick bands for chairs, etc. I've gotten lots of those for students over the years and it was fastest through OT. I would hope in kinder they would be doing lots of movement all day. Rug time, center time, play time, etc

Not even in trouble, just a hey little dude, remember your sweatshirt. He did get busted for turning lights off on the kids using the bathroom. 🤷🏻‍♀️ My own kid had teachers who would gladly accommodate her, but she didn't want to be different so she toughed it out more than needed.

Convo with the case manager and the teacher. I will say that I have had some students say very interesting things to their parents. One kid told his mom he got in trouble for taking his sweatshirt to recess. Actually he had been told to pick up his sweater where he had dropped it on the ground.

Read The Brides of High Hill. Probably the darkest one so far in this series. More than a couple times the "oh that's messed up" phrase came to mind. Still good, but definitely showed some cracks in our favorite cleric and storyteller. It's a favorite series though. I really enjoy each one.

Which one the surface, it makes it seem like it's more of an internal issue. But it's not. Because too often the parents are not given the full picture, leading to miscommunication, unrealistic expectations, the works. I escaped this only because I had older kids and I knew what was coming.

My biggest rants right now are when the IEP team at one level does not understand the structure of the next level (like elementary to secondary). I have lived this.

So many laws and regulations. There are rounds of testing that do need to happen at specific intervals. I have seen many young kids first qualify as speech only, especially in the preschool years. Sometimes that changes to add more services if the data supports it.

However, I see a lot, "But they had an IEP" which while it means something, does not mean everything. IEPs are not monolith, one-size-fits-all. It's an individual plan for the specific needs of that particular student.

katbook.bsky.social @katbook.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
I tend to not comment a lot about IEPs as much as I could. 1. I get ranty. 2. If I were to impart anything I would overthink because there is so much info there and only so many characters.

I sometimes relay these stories to my kids like, just don't ever do this and you will already be well above some of your peers. The bar is literally in hell.

I had 3 things in my favor: 1. Not my first kid. 2. Early health problems meant we got in with county services very early. 3. I had friends. Some were parents who dealt w/IEPs, some were case managers/aides/teachers.

Not remotely… because iocane comes from Australia, as everyone knows… and Australia is entirely peopled with criminals… and criminals are used to having people not trust them… as you are not trusted by me… so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you.

Also started the next novelette in the Singing Hills series - The Brides of High Hill. This time Chih has to solve a mystery. Seems like the life of a young bride about to be married to an older man (who has gone through many brides) is at stake.

Read parts of 3 books this week. Got a bit further in Vanished Birds. Starting to get more interesting with the mysterious boy. Getting more invested. In the History of the World in Six Glasses, I learned about an ancient, epic party that sounded quite amazing and hard to comprehend. And wine.

People are going to die because of scientific illiteracy…some have already.

Remember when they spent years telling us to panic over the hole in the ozone layer and then suddenly just stopped talking about it and nobody ever mentioned the ozone layer again?

Derek
What happened is scientists discovered chlorofluorocarbons were bad for the ozone, countries believed them, the Montreal Protocol was signed, and CFC use fell by 99.7%, leading to the stabilization of the ozone layer, perhaps the greatest example of global cooperation in history.

Some day I will have a crow army. Or a mutually beneficial crow partnership. Whatever. It's happening. Concern over the neighbors I have who are nice is all that holds me back.

I have been to a "surprise" wedding where the bulk of the people found out about the wedding at the last minute, but the food and drink were already provided so everyone left happy.

I am of the firm belief that you do not make your guests do extra extraneous work to attend your wedding. You provide food and drink, they provide the party - everyone wins.
