In Lund, I’m very much looking forward to making a contribution to the finance group with more research on financial intermediation and household finance and to bringing past experiences to my students and helping future economists understand how economic research can address real-world questions.

and to Knut Are Aastveit, my deputy and successor, for great partnership (and coffee). I also want to thank my amazing colleagues and ex-colleagues in research (whom I cannot mention all by name here) for making the bank such a generous, collegial and intellectually engaging workplace.

I want to especially thank Torbjørn Hægeland and Ida Wolden Bache for hiring me and entrusting me with the research department back in 2017 and for their support over the years, to Ole Christian Bech-Moen for continuing in that spirit,

Working with my Norges Bank colleagues in legal, monetary policy, financial stability and markets has taught me a lot about central bank policymaking and how an efficient and effective institution is run.

Norges Bank is one of the best examples of this advance. The bank has had a long-standing commitment to research and an admirable openness to letting the research run its course, even – or maybe particularly - when its findings will compel us to revise our economic views.

A back of the envelope calculation suggests that over the past 20 years roughly 50% of all published research on monetary policy and financial stability in top 20 economics and finance journals has been co-authored by current and former central bank staff.

Work at a central bank is a great driver of research, just as research increasingly is a driver of central bank policy because of central bank economists investigating monetary policy and financial stability questions important to policymakers with new angles and novel data sources.

In a new working paper, my co-authors Knut Are Aastveit, @jesper-bojeryd.bsky.social, Magnus Andreas Haare Gulbrandsen, @ragnarjuelsrud.bsky.social and I investigate "What do 12 billion card transactions say about house prices and consumption". www.norges-bank.no/en/news-even...

Using de-identified data on debit card payments and e-invoices for the near population of Norway, we study how housing wealth changes affect household spending. We focus on the 2014 oil-price collapse that created regional variation in house prices through differential exposure to the oil sector.

Comparing public workers in oil vs non-oil regions, we find the three-year marginal propensity to spend is 3.6%. The granular data enable us to show the consumption response is concentrated in home improvement, furnishings, and vehicles, and driven by a reduction in credit backed by home-equity.

Kasper Roszbach @kasperroszbach.bsky.social · 11/11/2025
The share of the spending response accruing to locally produced goods and services stands for 80% of the consumption decline. Collateral & wealth effects are key channels linking housing wealth to consumption; household balance-sheet heterogeneity is quantitatively important for the propagation.

Excited to share our latest research on VoxEU! Together with @claudenbach.bsky.social, @kasperroszbach.bsky.social and #talinasondershaus, we explore how 'Buy Now, Pay Later' (BNPL) services improve credit access and risk assessments in consumer banking.

In a new paper, @claudenbach.bsky.social, @elinmolin.bsky.social, #talinasondershaus and I show that Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) isn’t just changing how people shop—it has spillovers to mainstream bank lending because of proprietary data BNPL lenders hold. www.norges-bank.no/en/news-even...

Users of BNPL are more likely to get approved for traditional bank loans, enjoy lower interest rates, and display better repayment behavior. Banks benefit too, using BNPL data to assess risk more accurately and price discriminate.

So while BNPL has been shown to be associated with high coats for some users, it also helps expand credit access and promote financial inclusion. #BNPL #Fintech #Credit
