I'm interacting with at least 3 different groups of people on a weekly basis in FFXI right now and it feels like this is becoming my most socially active time with XI which is crazy considering how old it is and how long I've played it.

Maybe people understandably struggling with FFXI's various install anachronisms, but still successfully installing the game is a sign that a massive shift over to Linux on desktops is possible.

I've been using the command line in Windows a lot more for the past few months now, and I'm just now learning that you can erase the address path in file explorer and type in "cmd" and run applications that way.

I do think for XI especially as a new player you do kind of need to look at both bg-wiki and ffxiclopedia because the latter will have more fleshed out info on older systems in some cases, but possibly not be updated to reflect newer changes and difficulty expectations.

- if you’re not going for that authentic 2002 experience, go download the windower launcher/plugin loader and get yourself a proper minimap. incredibly useful because overworld objects that are quest related are completely invisible - also get the one that lets you disable the mount music

Take your time going through settings. So many options are there. "I wish I could... "...see how long my buffs last" "...scan the chat easier" "...make the UI was bigger" "...rebind my keyboard/controller" "...filter spam without filtering a whole chat" THERE'S SETTINGS FOR THOSE!!! AND MORE!!

when starting as a caster: if you need to buy a spell scroll, compare its price across the auction house and npc vendors. filling out your spell list can be really pricy, so you've gotta be frugal wherever you can also turn on your buff timers!!! config > misc. 3 > status icons > timer display on

Mine is: level THF!! I put it off for so long, but THF has a job trait called treasure hunter that can increase the drop rate for items. Sometimes drop rates for quest-required items can be very low, so save yourself a bit of heart burn.

I can kind of understand why they didn't include the first expansion in the free trial for a game that's probably not going to get a major story update again, but it would feel weird to me playing this and not having access to areas that feel basic and essential like Norg.

I hate to be a downer, but even with the changes to FFXI's free trial it is still very restrictive. It's kind of like if XIV's free trial included ARR and nothing else. But at least people will be able to spend more time with it if they want.

People elsewhere seemed to enjoy this so bugger it, you guys can have it too. I took what I've learned about how FFXI does fonts and turned it into a TTF. It's not perfect, but, it's (in my opinion) better than the Vana'diel UX one floating about, link in the second post

Sometimes I wonder if it would not be a good idea to make major changes to XIV's gameplay structure because it might alienate all the people who have gotten used to how it plays and have specific expectations for future updates. But can't please everyone I guess.
