Hyundai Ioniq 5 or its sibling, the Kia EV6. Or a used Chevy Bolt, which are cheap and are developing cult-like love amongst owners.

Borrowing from the SPR because you jacked up the price of oil because you claimed that domestic production insulated the US from global commodity markets and didn't look at a map before you bombed Iran is no basis for national energy policy. www.semafor.com/article/09/2...

Neither of those units are understandable to anyone except scientists who are already working in that field. If we want people to understand this stuff, we need to do the extra work to make it make sense for them. Here's a favorite one that I did. CO2 --> coffee.

Graphite all the way! My fav occurrence of graphite is when you get big flakes of it in marble. The remnants of former life, transformed back to its elemental form. It's a beautiful example of how geology is the ultimate recycler.

But it still rests in the hands of the regulators. Here in MT, our commissioners often do the exact opposite of what their staff recommends. The staff gets it right. That's not where the problem lies. (Here, at least. Can't speak for other places.)

This brings back fond memories of NASA's climate change email inbox. It was... wild. I enjoyed answering the more genuine questions, especially when the person had come up with some sort of "theory" that was way out there. I loved doing some basic math to help show them the validity of their idea.

Yes! Abandoned wells, along with the rest of the fossil fuel industry. Air pollution, water pollution, climate change, ecosystems wiped out... quite the steep price tag for all of that.

Karin Kirk @karinkirk.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Fully agree. And on PFAS and several other issues, the price tag of the damages will likely exceed all the money the companies earned on these products. But don't worry, we paid those companies for their polluting products and we'll get to pay again to deal with their harmful effects. Capitalism!

There are safe ways to work with silica-based materials, like using water during cutting and finishing to prevent airborne particles. This problem could be solved with better worker protections. As a homeowner, you can choose other materials (like marble!), and ask for proof of worker safety.

No, we just got a regular water heater because in cold climates there's not as much energy savings because it makes the space cold. I'm not an expert by any means, but I think heat pump water heaters make tons of sense in warmer climates - less so in cold climates.

One less gas appliance in the world! Today our 25 year old, gas water heater got recycled. The new tank is electric, and powered by rooftop solar. It took about 1.5 hours of sunshine to heat a full tank of cold water. Now, it's charging the car. Plenty of sunshine to spare (blue bars). Amazing.
An old hot water heater sitting in the driveway next to a contractor's truckA graph of solar production and electricity use at our home. The sun makes a lot of energy, and we used some to heat water and some to charge the car. Yay for free electricity!

That is a good thing, 100%. But the irony is real. We all get a few crumbs to help ease the pain that they are causing. NorthWestern nearly *quadrupled* the amount of coal in their portfolio this year. Air pollution for everyone! (Except for their executives, obvs, who don't even live in MT.)

Does anyone know of an indoor air quality monitor with an alarm? (not a push notification, but an actual alarm) We went to bed with the windows open and woke up to AQI of 180 outside. No fun! Seems preventable with the right setup. Thanks for any recommendations!
