Why would Chris Christie launch a presidential campaign that will never succeed? It's a gravy train compared to one-off side gigs as a lobbyist. Seems kind of Occam's Razorish to me. See also, "Buchanan, Pat: 1992, 1996, 2000."

On the "silver lining" side of this is the fact that every time the Fed raises the interest rate, there's a non-zero chance a certain someone might have an aneurysm.

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

Every. Single. Time. regulations are relaxed and there's a cheaper way to do anything, a company will do that. Fines are small. There's no jail time for execs who say sure, store fresh product next to rotting offal or workers must use plowed fields as latrines and then it *foreseeably* kills people.

Remember, there's no money for health care or disaster relief or adequate food inspection and weather prediction, but plenty of money to support something that already has billions and billions in investment helping it along. (And plenty of money for war and spoiling the people's landmarks.)

That said, I'm very unclear on what happens if the publisher doesn't file a claim or has gone out of business. But I think that doesn't change anything for the author. The unclaimed publisher funds becomes part of what will eventually be disbursed to close out the fund, way way down the timeline.

I think it's faithful to the Euripides play. The performances bring so much empathy and feminist energy to the plight of the conquered, likely beyond what Euripides intended. And Irene Papas actually looked like Helen might have looked.

New York Times summary: American A.I. makers complain about Chinese copycats
One of the most prominent American A.I. companies, Anthropic, sent a letter to Congress last month accusing its Chinese competitors of unfairly copying its technology. Other U.S. labs have argued that China’s A.I. tools would be much further behind theirs if not for a technique called distillation.
