The last two AllCons had been fun and lonely all at once. How did you start a conversation when everyone else was greeted with excited squeals, warrior roars, or effusive hugs? Lingering hopefully for a conversational opening had worked about as well as it did the rest of my life.
Breathe. I opened my eyes and focused hard on the concrete wall. The dull gray, the pebbly texture, the hairline cracks.
My costume is every bit as perfectly put together as Frank N. Furter’s. I’ve practiced the hairstyle. I actually have red hair. All fine and good, but then I remember that my mom always said I reminded her of delicate light vanilla pudding with a golden cherry on top.
I blew a long sigh at the concrete. My mother had meant to be helpful. But sure, I loved seeing a bland, listless dessert every time I looked in the mirror.
In Janeway’s uniform, I didn’t feel insipid and lifeless. I was sure that as soon as I had it on, I would feel light years away from Quinn Simmons, Pale Girl.
I’d be in the Delta Quadrant with nothing but adventure ahead of me.
