karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 25/05/202619 years of teaching in north Louisiana all packed up. Where I’ll land next, who knows. Headed to the sunshine state ☀️ 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 15/05/2026Proctored an AP exam today. There was a kid whose mom I worked with at the good old Blockbuster circa 2005. I mentioned it and the was quickly humbled when another kid asked me “what’s Blockbuster?”. 🫠 000

karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 27/04/2026Not sure how it’s fair to pit very expensive private schools against very public schools at the state high school tennis tournament, but my sophomore held on as long as he could against a very talented senior Country Day player. Lost by a few games each set and I couldn’t be prouder. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 26/04/2026I invite all stakeholders to experience lockdown drills with students at schools. Esp with our littles. And at a time when mental health resources are being stripped. In fact, at my school our once full time nurse is now par time & our mental health counselor is being taken from us after this year. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 20/04/2026Came up a bit short in regionals, but the kid did qualify for state in his sophomore year. Proud of his progress. Boys singles can be very very tough. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 20/04/2026Took until the last match of the season to get a win but thankfully my teammates pulled off enough victories to win the season. Next stop - state championship in Bossier/Shreveport. Spring tennis season is the best season. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 17/04/2026My dual enrollment history students experienced a bit of college from Tech professors, studied WW2 artifacts, examined Ruston newspapers from the war era, & learned about the occupation of France from our very own school counselor. Thanks @drewmckevitt.bsky.social for helping to organize! 1121
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 16/10/2025It might be a mess right now, but I love this city and being able to share my love of history with my students. And bringing them TO the history is always the ultimate goal. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 11/10/2025Jumping back to admire our nations beauty despite the ugliness right now. Bringing a group of 28 high schoolers to DC during a shutdown and massive polarization is not for the faint of heart. But I love this city so much. PS - Stubby is my favorite military pup. 010
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 14/09/2025Took a leave of absence & will most likely go back into hiding. But our class-wide alumni picnic was a highlight last month. Our small town has a complex history w/race (our school is 20 miles from Angola Prison), but to see our entire community come together was awesome. Class of 2001 represented. 100
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 07/06/2025Cancer sucks. The fastest decline since prognosis: May 13 to now hospice. My stepdad fully embraced my family over 20 years ago. His biggest pride (besides my mom of course) are his 6 grandsons and his one princess granddaughter. The next few weeks are going to be hard. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 07/06/2025Is Cleveland cool again? AP reading year 2. APHG is the 8th largest exam and growing. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 07/05/2025This week every year is always an emotional rollercoaster. State test scores come back, my AP kids took their big exam today, seniors said goodbye, ring ceremony, sports banquets. It’s a wild ride but I love these kids. My biological and my classroom kids ❤️ 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 01/04/2025Tough tough competition today. My boy was up 7-3 but lost his mental focus then came back and broke his opponents serve to win 8-6. So proud! 010
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 31/03/2025Never upset my kid didn’t pick up baseball or football. But super glad he did pick up a sport we can all play together. It also helps that he’s REALLY good. Freshman playing No 2 singles line for his high school. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 28/03/2025@drewmckevitt.bsky.social @ceaubin.bsky.social Amazing episode! Really enjoined the conversation and it helps that I’m actually teaching some of the content you discussed in my classes tomorrow! 132
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 28/03/2025Proud of my kid who had to work through a big knee injury to start the tennis season. Last two matches he dominated 8-9, 8-3 so it’s safe to say he’s getting his stride back. Tennis is our family sport so I love that my boys also love it. 100
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 25/03/2025Favorite quote I overheard from a conversation between students today. I’ll let yall guess who he was talking about it. I secretly wrote down his quote bc it was golden. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 23/03/2025@johnworsencroft.bsky.social it’s taken about a year to pick up a non-fiction book again, and as soon as I started reading it, I marked it all up like I’d done in all the grad classes. But then I realized it’s the LIBRARY’S book. Not mine 🤦♀️🤦♀️ @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social your book is fantastic! 010
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 18/03/2025Not a single red hat, shirt, etc in NYC. It was glorious. And yes I know MAGA exist there but the constant bombardment we see in in the deep south versus the complete absence of it in NYC was such a nice change of scenery. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 17/03/2025Three times to New York City, and it only gets better. It’s been a dream, NYC. 000

karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 11/03/2025Last year, one of my senior’s mother died suddenly in front of her. Last night, it happened again to one of our seniors. In our little community, this is devastating. They don’t teach you how to deal with this kind of trauma with students. All I can do is be there and the curriculum can come later. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 08/03/2025🚨 College Board quietly removed any and all AP Classroom videos that discuss any topics on race, diversity, inclusion. No heads up to teachers and students who rely on these and no explanation given. 30+ in AP World. Several in APGOV and APHUG. 8 in APUSH. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 06/02/2025I can’t stop thinking about this passage from Marjan Kamali’s Lion Women of Tehran. It punched me in the gut and took all the air out of me. Rarely do books illicit any kind of emotion from me, but considering our current climate, this got me. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 05/02/2025Are they not the same? Getting on a plane in March to NYC and I’m fearful which also means I’m anxious beyond my usual meds. 000

karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 26/01/2025I committed myself to Holocaust education after I walked the grounds of Auschwitz-Birkenau 10 years ago. I would have never believed it if you told me someone did Nazi salute in front of the presidential seal. And so many in power have been silent or have been defending it. In America. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 22/01/2025I’ve taught high school since 2006. Students barely noticed elections pre-2020. Major shift after 2016. Vibes post-2020 now are totally weird, awkward, and sometimes unnerving. Today I was asked “was it really a Nazi salute?” I don’t know how to answer that without fear of losing my job. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 19/01/2025One day you’re closing down the bars, the next you’re spending Saturday nights in cat puddles. Wouldn’t want it any other way. 010
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 13/01/2025Did not have “Americans unite by leaving TikTok and joining the actual Chinese app” on my 2025 BINGO card. I love some malicious compliance. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 13/01/2025Many district & state K-12 curricula have moved to very rigid (boring) scripted curriculum. Teacher repeats word for word. I refuse. Bc today, I got to talk about Clara Bow & Taylor Swift, as well as moonshine & NASCAR. Scripted curriculum just doesn’t give you those nuggets that kids really love. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 01/01/2025Happier times. Those high school connections run deep. We truly had an amazing group full of diverse personalities. Percy always made us laugh. The smack he was talking when we took this photo had us rolling and it took about 10 minutes for us to behave and calm our laughter. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 01/01/2025Starting this morning with the news of an attack in my home state was so disheartening. And then learned one of my high school classmates was a victim in this attack made it all the more worse. Heartbreaking. 000
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 01/01/2025Favorite NYE memory was our high school 1999/2000 Y2K party. But nothing beats 2016/17 when my youngest decided to make a sudden appearance 6 weeks early while his dad was off on a work trip. I don’t believe in miracles but gosh this is pretty close. NICU —> 2024. 010
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 30/12/20242024 was the year I finished my masters in history. My favorite seminars - War & Society and WWI - have really shaped how I study and teach history. Thank you Dr Anderson & Dr Worsencroft for pushing me out of my comfort zone and guiding me through the program. Always grateful. 111

karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 22/12/2024Just call this a cat account. My view the next few weeks. I’ve been beyond swamped and my brain hurts (more so than last year when I rushed to finish my masters while teaching full time). A much needed break. Cats, wine, and my kids who both have the flu 🤪 030
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 10/12/2024Am I upset I’m not at ballparks very weekend? Absolutely not. I love that my kids picked up my and the hubs favorite sport. karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 23/11/2024This still is not really a raise as we’ve been getting this $2000 for a few years now. And I probably won’t notice since they just raised our healthcare premiums. And I do not think it’s enough to keep teachers from leaving. From discipline, to testing, to scripted curriculum. It’s been rough. 010
karimcguire.bsky.social @karimcguire.bsky.social · 23/11/2024Never fails. I get the flu or something flu-like every year at the start of my TG break. It’s like my body knows I’m due for a break. So anyway I’m curled up with a medicine ball and open for book suggestions. Need something good. 110
