Had the pleasure of attending a concert at Taliesen yesterday, where the building is half the performance. (Picture taken early, seats filled in later.)

A piano sits on the wooden stage floor, and cushioned seats line two angled sides. Above, an oddly shaped ceiling with dark wood beams creates angles for the eye to follow. Around the perimeter left to right is a statue, a carved wood room divider, a wall painted with a quote from Walt Whitman, and a large window divided into squares. There is a plain curtain hanging to one side where there’s usually a beautiful curtain made by Frank Lloyd Wright’s students, but it’s under restoration.

Got to see Emily St. John Mandel through the Wisconsin Book Festival tonight, and she reminded us, as in Station Eleven — survival is insufficient. Even in the darkest times we need art, books, music.

Home at last. Thanks to those who followed along, and I recommend a Dakotas road trip to anyone who likes national parks/monuments, the old West, Native American history and culture, wild animals, and oversized yard art. They did not disappoint.

Shout out to the free, informative, entertaining ranger talk usually held at national park amphitheaters. I learned about a guy who parachuted on top of Devil’s Tower, how the Badlands were used for WWII bombing practice, and stargazing this week. Plus guided tours at Wind Cave and Jewel Cave. 👏👏👏
