Another pink one! Those little lavender puffers at the bottom mean it will rain later.
Another bright pink sunrise lights up high, flat clouds high above South Florida. Small, low, puffy clouds at the bottom of the image are dark lavender in color and indicate that rain is coming. Palm trees are silhouetted on the right side of the photo.

Quite a sunrise this morning!
Just before sunrise the clouds in the east are lit up in bright pinks and oranges. The silhouettes of palm trees are in the foreground. Pinky-gold wisps of cloud streak the sky at sunrise.

The Heritage Apple Corps have found trees in central Oregon that are genetic matches for some of the rare "lost" apple varieties we find in the islands. With more sampling, both here and there, we hope to be able to properly identify these varieties and bring them back into production.

If you can't adopt there are lots of other things you can do to help. Foster, volunteer, fundraise, do a supply drive, sign up for your local shelter's newsletter to find out other ways to help. Remember that volunteering doesn't necessarily mean physical labor - shelters need all kinds of skills!

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

Around the office park: a Pileated woodpecker hanging on the underside of an oak limb foraging, plus white ibises picking delicious things out of the damp ground.
Pileated woodpecker is the largest in North America after the almost certainly extinct ivory billed. The Pileated is a big bird with a distinctive pointed red tuft of head feathers, a black and white striped face and a black body and wings. They are curious, and for some reason love our office building, and will creep along the window ledges looking for insects in the cracks. This one is hanging upside down under a thick tree limb of a Florida native oak tree, looking for bugs and pulling off chunks of bark and dropping them. White ibises are now quite common in suburban South Florida as lawns offer nice flat meadows areas for foraging. This band, with their duck-sized white bodies and distinctive curved red beaks, are rummaging along the grassy median in the parking lot.

Around someone else’s office park: the lonely peacock. They said he showed up four years ago, spends every spring screaming eee-YAH day and night, but no luck. There are no peahens in the immediate area, so he shows off his plumage to disinterested lady ducks.
A gorgeous male peafowl in the lawn of an office building. It is not mating season so his tail has fallen out, and he’s mostly interested in whether I plan to give him a snack. He’s a bright iridescent blue, turquoise and purple fellow,.

A rainy evening stroll at the Morikami museum and gardens was actually pretty fine. The main pond’s alligator was enjoying the rain, too.
The large pond at Morikami Japanese Garden and Museum in the early evening under a thundery sky. There is a rail fence in the immediate foreground, then the pond with tropical foliage and trees all around the edges. Beyond the far side of the water are thunderclouds with one patch of blue sky peeking through. In the early evening rain one of the Morikami garden’s alligators is enjoying a paddle across the large pond.

Around the office park: a storm in the distance -can you find the jet? A fairy ring unraveled into an “S”, and resurrection ferns in a tree trunk pleased with the late in season start of the rains.
Looking out an office window some stories up, we see a storm cloud in the distance made up of coiled white clouds with a wispy storm top extending high into the atmosphere. The land below is utterly flat and covered with tropical vegetation with a few building visible here and there. The is a commercial jet swinging past the cloud if you zoom in very closely. An old and reliable fairy ring of mushrooms has popped up, and while this spot usually produces a circle, today it is a long sort of S figure. Tiny resurrection ferns cover the bark of this tree. These dry up at a moments notice and look dead. But with our rainy season having arrived about 3 months late, these are unfurled and bright green.

Around the office park: this Grest Blue Heron has been hanging around during this drought, and today caught a nice fat fish. Everyone knows the best place to eat a flopping fish is in the shade at the edge of the golf course.
A great blue heron has caught a nice fish in the alligator pond. He’s standing among the reeds holding it in his beak trying to decide what to do. Mind made up, the heron walks across the ditch and climbs up the opposite embankment under a bald cypress and a palmetto tree. He is mostly a silhouette against the green of the golf course, and the fish is still giving a vigorous flappy attempt to escape.

The underside of the highest part of a thundercloud, which is stretching out far ahead of the rainy part lower down.
The high leading edge of a thunderhead straight overhead is bright white along the edge and a dark bluish-gray further from the edge, with complex patterns in it from the cloud moving. Around the office park: ibises, those giganto lilies I can’t recall the name of, a palmetto tree with psylotum and ferns growing on it, and a thunderhead.
Ibises abound! The youngsters have mostly all turned white now and are striding around the parking lot pulling worms with their long red beaks. The Egyptian god of wisdom and writing,Thoth, was symbolized by the ibis. I cannot remember the name of these giant fragrant lilies. The plant itself is an enormous cluster of leaves and the white, sprawling flowers are each the size of a dinner plate on a thin yellow stalk, all connected at the base. This palmetto tree still has the boot jacks of old branches that were trimmed off clinging to the trunk, so golden polypody ferns ( a very large fern with long dark brown stalk and huge leaf panels that are often blueish in color) and the psylotum have taken advantage. Psylotum were thought to be remnants of plants from before leaves ever developed, but that is now in question. These look a bit like floppy green whisk brooms, and have little yellow knots on the stalks where spores form. A thunderhead at enough of a distance to see the anvil shaped head forming while the lower rolling clouds lead out ahead of it.

The little cow got some Cat TV over the weekend. She carefully checked behind the thing to see if she could get at the birds that way. Smarty! If you point she also looks where you’re pointing, which dogs will do but many cats just stare at you like “What? I’m not looking.”
