I recommend returning your marked ballot in a local dropbox rather than via USPS if your jurisdiction has those option. (This requires that you be present in your home area; dropboxes from other counties won’t generally ensure you ballot will be received and counted).

Way back in April, a team mostly from UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego wrote a really fun paper: "Your Agent is Mine: Measuring Malicious Intermediary Attacks on the LLM Supply Chain". I only just bumped into it today; here's why it's cool. The gist is that a whole lot of infrastructure that […]

If you're at all familiar with the housing politics of Santa Cruz as recently as 5-10 years ago, this is astonishing. Never let anyone tell you that a NIMBY-controlled city can't change. lookout.co/a-housing-bo...
Chart showing that Santa Cruz has 3,727 units in its development pipeline

"but AI is good at math now!" Yeah, you know who else is good, arguably even a lot better at math? Humans. Volume in proved statements isn't going to get you the type of complexity theory shattering results that you'd need to break public key cryptography. Yes AI is advancing at fast speeds […]

This is not just an AI problem but a general tech/private equity management vibe problem we began to encounter when those guys moved into Hollywood due to either money or streaming dominance. Small top-heavy staffs who don't go to set don't make future show runners.

I love getting my phone out to find it's been having a fun pocket adventure. Wifi hotspot and torch are on. Brightness on max. Language set to Croatian.

It's important to remember that the AI doom scenario assumes not only that intelligence is a single well-defined thing, but also that intelligence solves literally every single problem, and that in every conflict overwhelming intelligence always wins. This is just not how anything works.

Abstraction is the original sin of technology. It's essential to do anything and we have taught two generations to treat abstractions as real, but not what's beneath the ones they use nor the implications of this lie, and we wonder why no one can see the impact the lie has on their work and world.

Things I've seen that needed to be spelled out to LLMs or that I have personally needed to spell out: - "Do not under any circumstances write your own JSON parser." - "Do not write your own PEG parser." - "Do not write your own CSV parser" - "Use the coroutine context, do not roll your own." - […]

I love doing laundry. The fact I am putting a combo of powders and liquids in a machine that whirrs around the dirty clothes and them coming out completely clean again, and then putting the wet things in another machine that whirrs them around with hot air and then I get clothes as good as new […]

A beautiful, angry, and important post by @anildash about how a whole generation has been brainwashed into censoring themselves. I like the actionable recommendations at the end, though I’m missing “take a big stick, and beat the billionaires to death with it.”

The ground squirrel or whatever ate my tomato plants and left the tomatoes 🙈 I am gonna start putting chewing gum in its tunnels like my grandma did, if it eats ONE MORE plant
