@ynot1989.bsky.social I saw you're patreon post and how you were trying to find a map projection. I think you used Coordinate Reference System: North_America_Albers_Equal_Area_Conic Authority ID: ESRI: 102008 Would've sent this over patreon but i can't post images in replies.

I got a rocket design textbook and it really said "Israel has lots of enemies so it has to do weird rocket maneuvers to not get their spacecraft shot down."

the author was venting a little lol

Text book paragraph, "Often the most asked question by spacecraft operators is: How could an intelligent engineer have been so dumb as to design the spacecraft this way? This suggests that it might be a good idea to have a spacecraft operator on the initial design team and even pay attention to what they're saying from time-to-time."

question: does the Metal Gear Solid series count as gundam?? If so, it has a pretty well executed message in my opinion.

Metal Gear Ray, mobile nuclear weapons platform mech with an additional railgun piloted by FOXHOUND member Liquid Snake in his battle against Solid Snake at Shadow Moses Island. (Metal Gear Solid 1)

Metal Gear Ray, amphibious Metal Gear developed by the USMC to hunt down MG Rex derivatives. Pictured is a manned MG Ray piloted by Revolver Ocelot attempting to kill Solid Snake, Raiden, and Solidus Snake before taking control of Arsenal Gear. (Metal Gear Solid 2, Sons of Liberty)

The Shagohod, a Soviet mobile nuclear weapons platform (metal gear prototype) developed in the 1960s. Commanded by Colonel Volgin of the Soviet GRU during the 1964 power struggle against Khrushchev and the KGB. In the foreground is Naked Snake (Big Boss). (Metal Gear Solid 3, Snake Eater)

Metal Gear Excelsus at Shabhazabad Air Base, Pakistan. Piloted by a nanomachine-pumped Senator Armstrong in his battle against Raiden, now a cyborg ninja (bottom). (Metal Gear Rising, Revengeance)

A very niche cause I support is enforcing dark sky reserves almost everywhere. Aside from airports you really don't need lights to shine upwards in most scenarios. Converting street lamps would be pretty simple, although it would be more difficult elsewhere.

streetlight with "shield" surrounding top and sides, so that light only shines downward.

@emperortigerstar.bsky.social if you don't mind me asking, how do you interpret the map of Midwest during the War of 1812. AFAIK no one's ever made an actually decent map of the War of 1812/Creek War with lines of control. Treaty maps are overlapping as well. This is my interpretation for the start.

Before Sputnik and the rise of radio navigation, it was thought that spacecraft would rely on optical navigation (looking at planets, terrain, stars) for position, attitude, and other flight data determination. One pre-Sputnik concept was to have cameras tracking notable, bright objects as shown.

I'd love to send solar gravitational lensing telescopes to 550 AU to observe star systems and other objects. There was a paper a while back that estimated you could map planets 98 ly away with a resolution of 1 pixel per 25 km^2, just due to the sun amplifying resolution (see example).

Something, imo just as cool, is that this year the Japanese are launching Martian Moons eXploration. MMX is a sample return mission, visiting Mars' moons Phobos and Deimos, collecting rock samples, and returning to Earth by 2031.

I would really like a mission to study Neptune's moon Triton. It's probably a captured dwarf planet from the Kuiper Belt. It has ~40 year long seasons and cryvolcanism, shooting ice plumes deep into space from its subsurface oceans. It was only closely imaged once during Voyager 2's 1989 flyby.

Now I'm morbidly curious, how would you all vote in this poll?

Poll: If WWII last into the late 1940s or the Axis outright wins and conquers Europe (barring Britain, which remains an Allied Power/American airstrip (No Sealion)) how much do the Allies nuke Germany?

OPTIONS

Cold War: An uneasy, horrifying peace with Berlin

Limited Strikes: Logistics & military sites obliterated

One-Way MAD: All German cities neutralized

Sterilization: Carpet nuked into total uninhabitability

Nuclear Winter: Axis Powers mass produce WMDs

For heat stroke it depends on humidity and temperature. Heatstroke will become a larger and larger risk for humid tropical areas as global warming continues. Earth is also a complicated, chaotic system. 2+ °C of warming may spiral, causing 'tipping points' with cascading devastation.
