Lol I adopted a Neopet called poo_poo_wee_wee as a lab rat, made her a nice Woodland Zafara, and then when I released her for re-adoption she almost immediately got pinged as having an 'inappropriate' name and nuked. Great work protecting the 30+ year old core Neopets userbase there. 🤣
An error message from Neopets with a bright red header stating 'Oops!' and the message, 'Error: This Neopet name has been deemed inappropriate.'A blurry screenshot of a sad Woodland Zafara pet from Neopets. The only remaining known image of poo_poo_wee_wee, gone but forever in my fa---uh, heart.

This movie was so important to me I own the soundtrack, which I apparently used enough that my dad had to reattach the parts of the case together years ago. 🤭 Yes I still know almost all the songs because I was probably singing them only a week or two ago.
A worn-looking CD of the soundtrack to The Swan Princess sitting on a laptop keyboard with a screw visible in the hinging part of the case.

The latest update on the Nomad Drive Put Ears On My Van Project. I don't think the demo is coping well with what I'm doing. The van was rolling around like it was drunk when I loaded my save up tonight. 🤭
A van on the road in the Nomad Drive demo. A bucket sits behind it, but the most notable detail is the stacks of tyres attacked sideways to each side of the van, which are getting beyond the point of being easily countable and extend all the way across the road. The same van from the previous Nomad Drive image, this time from the front and tilted in a bizarre manner with most of its wheels off the ground and the van appearing to be propped up on one of its tyre 'ears'.

Sorting the several thousand photos on my phone from the past 18 months or so. Contrary to what's claimed sometimes about phone photos I do look at mine all the time, because I take lots of pictures of delightful things like this adorable little person I don't remember drawing for my daughter. 🥰
A whiteboard doodle in red marker of a little person with long dishevelled hair, a happy face, and a head slightly too large for her body. Possibly meant to be my toddler given the proportions.

My kidlet keeps urging me to play the Nomad Drive demo more, which doesn't actually have a whole lot more mysteries to reveal to us after 45+ hours, but I recently discovered you can stick whole stacks of tyres to the sides of the van and I am going to abuse this as far as it can go.
A screenshot from the demo of Nomad Drive depicting a van parked by the side of the road with its back hatch open, engine out and sitting on the road. On either side of the van a stack of tyres protrudes sideways. The overall effect is of a weird face with either very spindly ears or very silly arms.

I wish I didn't have to keep seeing people suggesting that actually generative AI displacing human programmers is a good use of the technology, almost always with a casual side of 'bully the nerds' because fuck us for being little freaks who LIKE doing something they don't understand I guess!
Snippet of a skeet saying, "as far as I can tell, the only good use of AI is to replace expensive software developers. which is fine. dorks had a good enough run."

On urging from my kid I rewatched several times and by the end my brain had gone to some new places.
A screenshot from the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode 'Chain of Command' where Captain Picard shouts, 'There are... four lights!' turned into a really crusty meme so now it says 'Beat in... four eggs!' and Picard has a freaky dollar bill face and I realise that the alt text is absolutely not helping anyone to understand any of this out of context but if it makes you feel any better I don't understand what I've done here either!

I don't really get anything from Humble any more because the technical stuff is mostly Packt garbage and generative AI garbage these days, but I do receive their emails still and I was mildly interested in the idea of a homeschooling bundle... but you know what, never mind. 💀
A screenshot from a Humble (bundle) email visualising a 'Complete Homeschooling Coding, AI & Game Dev Bundle' which promises to contain Godot, Blender, AI, AI, and Cybersecurity. Supporting Alzheimer's Research UK which I believe is nice at least, although I would suggest that engaging with LLMs to any substantial degree, especially at an early age, is probably counter-productive to the aim of ensuring lifelong healthy brain function.

THAT'S MY SILLY LITTLE FIC I DID THAT. I do worry when I'm writing fic about something that doesn't/hasn't yet attracted fic that it might be received as undesirable by the original artist so I'm happy if this was taken in the sense of homage I intended.
A screenshot from the game Unfair Flips (get it on Steam! flip some coins! get stared at creepily the whole time!) which, between TAILS and HEADS, states, "Someone even wrote fanfiction of it on AO3."

Threw together a rough interface for my text-based game in between child-chasing yesterday. It's ugly but everything is approximately in the right place and that lets me proceed with the hard part of the project today. 50 lines of my own code using PySide6 (a Qt project for Python).
A program window titled 'Get In The Car!' The top half of it is coloured green and contains the text, 'This is where game text goes.' The bottom half is divided up into a black and blue square to the left, with the right three quarters divided up into two vertically stacked sections: a thin blue section labelled, 'This is where options go.' and a thicker yellow section labelled, 'This is where player responses go. This is the only place you can edit yourself.'

The typing practice application I threw together for my kid went off better than I expected! Didn't take any longer to create than it did to conclude the existing options for Linux weren't what we wanted. No chatbots were enslaved in the making of this single user software either. 🤭
A PyGame window titled 'tak tak tak' which contains two rectangles in light and darker grey that sort of look like a greyscale country flag. The top rectangle has 'Hi! It is nice to meet you!' in black somewhat handwriting-esque text on it. The bottom one says 'Hi! It is' in green, and then 'ffddf' in black indicating text that does not match the top text.

This game was with me during a tough time in my life and there's so much I could say about it but I mostly just want to take a moment to remember this amazing early game area lockout which has now been a part of my personality for nearly 25 years.
Two screenshots from the GBA game Golden Sun depicting the best method ever devised for keeping the player out of an area not meant to be accessed yet: frolicking puppies blocking the way. The text boxes read, "There are some puppies playing over there." and, "We should let them be."

Forgot Encarta MindMaze had some unhinged storyline. There's a messed-up part of me that wants to create a MindMaze fanfic and delve deeper into this lore. 🤭
A very wonky photo of a CRT monitor displaying Encarta MindMaze. There is a room in a castle with some guy apparently on hands and knees on the floor twerking, which for the record did not make any more or less sense when I was twelve. At the bottom of the screen there is a top-down map showing the room we've started in and the destination, and there is an area where you can change the 'area of interest' the game will cover, with the options: All Areas, Life Science, Georgraphy, History, Physical Science, Social Science, Religion and Philosophy, Art, Language, and Literataure, Performing Arts, Sports, Hobbies, and Pets. I have it set to All Areas because I don't want to miss out on any part of this diverse experience.A photo of a CRT monitor displaying part of the MindMaze game. A fancy heraldic text box says: "Say! A visitor! That's nice. I've been rather lonely here by myself. Sitting around here like this for a while has given me a chance to get to know myself better, though. For instance: as it happens, I have strange, magical powers. That was news to me! But I keep hearing this riddle in my head, and I somehow know that if I could answer it, the curse would be liftted from this room. Amazing, isn't it? Here's the riddle:"

Part of a chart indicating that from mid-February to mid-July of 2026 I read The Murder at the Vicarage, The Body in the Library, The Moving Finger, and A Murder is Announced by Agatha Christie, Game Changer by Rachel Reid, Lord of Chaos by Robert Jordan, Casual by Koji A. Dae, and The Family Next Door by Sally Hepworth.

For good measure, some pics of my wife's repair job on the innards of the front part of the case. The screw holes just shattered but she gathered up every little bit of plastic and put them back together because she knows this machine is my baby. 🤭
The backside of a rather complicated looking piece of plastic sitting on newspaper, with a mechanism for moving one part up and down and a couple of screw holes that are cracked and now aggressively surrounded by epoxy.A closer view of one of the cracked screw holes showing a little more detail of the jigsaw puzzle it became and incidentally a bit more of the sliding bit mechanism which has a metal part that coils and all looks very improbable. There is a loose plastic washer-y bit hanging out in a plastic alcove too.

Got the repaired CD drive installed back in my Aptiva and the repaired case back on, so to celebrate here's a photo of the computer naked. I never bother reposting my own posts because IDGAF if the whole world sees them but I am tempted to repost this sexy shot weekly, just try and stop me.
An IBM Aptiva machine without its distinctive slipcase so that the bare metal frame is visible, and a little bit of the internals through a gap in the front. In the background of the desk it sits on is a wooden tea-warming stand, a hint of Furby, and a couple indistinct photographs of pretty Kpop girls. If you recognise them this will tell you far too much about me as a person.

Here's my placeholder friend in their natural environment. This is a little incremental game I'm putting together to help my kid expand his vocabulary and understand synonyms. Everything you might interact with describes what you should do in varying ways as you approach. Obnoxious but effective. 😀
A Pygame window entitled 'One Apple' featuring a pale lilac background with a little stick figure standing near a pixel art apple in the middle. A sans serif font in the top left proclaims 'buff the apple' in a size that rather dwarfs the other elements of the display.

I know it's trendy to bemoan the state of technology today, but just I can't get fully into the needed state of despair in a world that is producing robot axolotls.
A Zuru Pets Alive 'Swimming Axolotl' which is as you would expect an adorable pink plastic axolotl in packaging that proclaims, 'I swim like a real axolotl!' I have never been close enough to either a real axolotl or the robot version to pass judgment, but I'm sure you're doing great, sweetie.

I've been hesitant to pile a monitor on my RiscPC because I worry the weight will fracture something, but succumbed for the moment because we're short on bench space. Now all I can see is the colour difference between the well-loved monitor and hardly-used computer... 😅
An Acorn RiscPC 600 with an Acorn monitor sitting on top of it, a grey checked tea towel diplomatically separating them. A keyboard is stashed to one side of the machine. The monitor is rather strikingly yellowed when compared to the machine itself.

Cleaning up an XP-era Dell computer potentially for the kids to use, my wife got it from our old uni so I'm very familiar with the plastic fantastic construction of the outside of the case but was not expecting this hardcore metallic hinge???!

I do like that they make it easy for you to just... grab things from wherever they might be stored to craft. I think once you get the hang of that it helps to keep the process fun rather than oppressive. Because there are a loooooot of different crafting materials to cope with.

The generative AI bundle emails are driving me absolutely bonkers. I used to occasionally get a good tech books bundle through Humble but their recent intense 'AI PYTHON AI AI AI' focus has really made me despair of seeing anything worth my while again.

It's been a little while since I started a knitting project! My daughter needs mittens for winter, a good chance for me to further my goal of making more of our clothes - if I can keep her from turning my yarn into a mess as I try to knit it. 😅

Now you get to find out why my spelling game is called I *Can* Do It. 🙃 Temporary art I made in like thirty seconds obviously but it's helping me to update the code from using rects to using sprites, which is a tiny bit more fiddly and I always forget how it works. Still, PROGRESS!
A squarish Pygame window with the title 'I Can Do It!' Inside the window is a mostly featureless white expanse with one very bad pixel art trash can and four yellow abominations that you would not realise are pixel art banana peels without my telling you. To the left, some text reads 'Completed: 0/40'.

This is what the game is looking like at this point. Going to give it a graphical upgrade this weekend and fully automate it: at the moment I have to stand over his shoulder quickly figuring out what each word is supposed to be from the scrambled letters. 😂

The good news is after a session this afternoon, my game is nearly ready for next week! The not-so-good news is I just introduced a bug that makes it look a bit like you might die seven days after playing... 🙀🟥
A squarish Pygame window titled 'I Can Do It!' Inside, the window is crowded with red squares containing the letters t, h, and e to the point where it just looks like one fragmented mass. One white square stands bewildered in the mass while the text tethhttttthheehhe stretches across the top and off the window. The overall effect is incredibly threatening.

Dug up the prototype I'm going to be extending for this project. I made this to illustrate how very generic gaming concepts could be made into all sorts of things with varied graphics. I don't know that my kid was that interested in the philosophy though, he just liked making the score go up. 😂
