Death, when inflicted deliberately, must have an instrumental purpose to have any hope of surviving the moral tests of those who survive. Hegseth glories in death for its own sake, as an end in itself. This is a symbolic new low for him, but of a piece with his tenure.

This is part of what makes executions so morally depraved. It is a sober calculation on the part of the state to engage in extreme sanction. In Hegseth's case, he's taking it yet further still. He wants a livestream where people can bathe in blood for pleasure.
