All Your Base felt as much like an injoke rather than something that itself was funny, was it old millenials that kickstarted that one or young gen-x though *checking* well I guess the music video part was young gen-x made at least, rip Jeffrey that was way too young.

starting to think AI slop translation guys don't actually give a shit about other people or the works they claim to love
a long youtube comment that's too large to put in alt text but an overly defensive rant from a person that used ai to inject a MTL translation into giftopia full of cope and saying if you don't like it make a patch being replied to by a person claiming they've been working on a patch for a year with other people and being generally open about what they think are possible issues and the lack of humanity in the auto translation approach.

The original patch slop poster kurtly replied that they edited one of the issues raised in a single short line of text, completely ignoring any plea to basic human decency.

This stuff is so crazy like Epic can't make money out of Fortnite...what the fuck are you guys doing over there. The solution is to inject something people hate into our game that is losing players and our developers don't want to use.

but yes in terms of like, rising productions costs are going to kill games (some of them anyway, this is from 2013), this is what killed the WipEout series (at the time).
quote about how WipEout became too expesnive to make ""So for me the series always evolved and did new things and was innovative, and supported Sony's strategic agenda, and it did it very well. It was there for launch of PSP and Vita, and it was there for PS3 as a flagship for PSN. But with team sizes always growing and production costs going up, if there's a limited audience of a fixed size, you've either got to do it cheaper or change the game so it attracts more people. Is there a massive audience out there waiting for a futuristic racer as well as a Grand Theft Auto or a Call of Duty? I'm not sure there is.

"They had an audience. I suspect it wasn't growing. But if your team is growing and your costs are growing, then you're not going to be very profitable, are you? You could sell a million copies, but can you do ten million? No. There are not ten million people out there waiting for this game.""

buried in this old article is a quote explaining why wipeout is good and not shit (you can play any of the PS1 versions right now and they're still shit hot 10/10 classics) cause hey they made them so they were fun if you actually played them
quote about wipeout from one of the devs saying "In the beginning, WipEout's creators didn't set out to deliberately punish players. "We just set it up so it was fun for us to play," Burcombe says. "Those days are long gone now. As long as you were having fun with it, you thought it would be fun for everyone else. And actually, when people got over the massive hurdle you put in there, when they understood the controls and it took practice, once you got it, the satisfaction from the gameplay was absolutely immense."

Anything that involves flying around space or zero gravity you'll probably have a decent to great time with the Sphere 360 idk maybe try like Ace Combat, Colony Wars, G-Police, V2000 or Invasion. I'm tempted to run Armored Core through it to see if the Sphere can tame that control scheme.
I ran out of photos I hope no one notices this is the exact same main shot of the sphere 360 I already used above.

Fake dpad mode has several setups accessed with key combos and is pretty much the entire way you'll be using it - this mode includes the "Descent" setup which is really the main thing you want here although why you're playing PS1 Descent specifically now. Anyway it does work GREAT just be gentle.
photo of a now clean sphere 360 ball, everyone likes clean balls, you can also see the mode switch and a red led (unlit) which lets you swap the mode the controller is in.
170 7
KaL the GhouLecKo @kaly.myatproto.social · 07/10/2026
Everything else you need to use the modes that switch on the front activates which lets you do native mode - with literally no support, Analogue Controller - Awkward defaults and its pretending to be the big twin joystick, NeGcon mode - good but just use a NeGcon? and its fake dpad mode which
another shot of a hand holding the sphere 360, I think this is after I dusted it so it looks pretty good now. I'm really suspicious that Sony basically shot this thing in the foot a little bit since it kind of seems like it would have directly competed with their own controller and there's a lot of material in the paperwork that suggests this controller was intended to get its own label on games which never happened not even the couple that support it.
171 7
KaL the GhouLecKo @kaly.myatproto.social · 07/10/2026
So does it work? The short answer is yes and far better than it maybe should (but hey ASCIIware says it was made for NASA so) but it has some issues. Firstly those three games mentioned on the box, only Forsaken actually natively supports it however MDK mentioned in the manual works reasonably well.
close up of the sphere 360 ball, this shot is incredibly dustly like holy shit it looks like I left it out for weeks but I think this was it sitting around for less than a day.

It came with a demo/training disc which I didn't photograph but does a good job of demonstrating that the controller works and getting used to how to generally move with it, the disc also has a pretty sick breakbeat song to train to. The face buttons themselves are adequete B+ so no problems there.
a close up of the sphere 360s face buttons, I don't actually have that many photos left so I'm going to be rationing them for the rest of the posts, they're REAL face buttons though and there's PS logo on this thing...this might as well be official...hopefully sony won't release an analogue gamepad at the exact same time.

KaL the GhouLecKo @kaly.myatproto.social · 07/10/2026
Firmly but not tightly grasp your ball with 3 fingers like this, you don't want to squeeze it and then you're free to experience six full axis of control. Side to Side, Forward Back, Tilt Left/Right, Pivot Forward Back, Twist Left to Right, Pull Up and Down. There's far less travel then you expect.
a human holding the sphere 360 ostensibly correctly, you have to put your thumb on the front center of the controller. There's a bit of resistance when you move it but not heaps so you never should need to shove it much.
1111 11
KaL the GhouLecKo @kaly.myatproto.social · 07/10/2026
Due to how the sphere must be used (and it must be used) you have an unusual 6 face button layout with the remaining triggers on the back. The presence of a circular dpad suggests that you COULD use this one as a fight controller but unfortunately the dpad itself is acceptable it's not amazing.
a different side photo of the sphere 360, focus on the d-pad and ballback view of the sphere 360, it's that kind of speckly metal plastic that was popular in the 90s but not the kind that explodes instantly, you can see the R1/R2 triggers here, there's not amazing but they're not really worse than the PS1 dual shocks.

KaL the GhouLecKo @kaly.myatproto.social · 07/10/2026
Once removed from its confinement/place of worship the Sphere 360 impresses with its unusual form. Pure 90s with a metal grey colour scheme and deadly pointy angles crossed with curves presumably for aerodynamics. The ominous titular sphere is unmissable of course although it isn't actually a sphere
A general photo of the sphere 360 with the full discus shape thing with an orb on it on full display, I didn't notice when I was taking the photo how dusty the black ball is but it's crazy dusty, later on in the photo set there's a photo where I noticed and the ball is dusted so keep an eye out!

My box is quite beat up but what can you do. Notable for being designed by the legendary Hock Wah Yeo (obscuritory.com/essay/incred...) it certainly gives off a commanding presence like this thing is sealed in a metal container for everyone's safety, holes in the side...is it alive?
partial side view of the sphere 360 box, there's a bunch of air holesthe back of the sphere 360 box, it's a bit beat but all the text can be read and there's a diagram highlighting the controller. It touts true 360 motion control (wow motion control and it's a six axis controller, this thing is like the future of the past in the future all in one)

KaL the GhouLecKo @kaly.myatproto.social · 07/10/2026
The legend itself - the Sphere 360, sibling to the SpaceOrb, licensed for the PS1 by ASCIIware. It's a six axis controller released for the PlayStation right around when Sony was messing around with a dual stick kind of gamepad thing...hmm well I'm sure things will work out great let's look at 1/?
a beaten up box for the sphere 360 controller, it's grey and has a decent amount of text about the controller, a LARGE PS1 official licensed product is visible.

Shawn Layden actually talks about that later in the article and I guess he's just a tiny bit bitter that he got flamed about it but Vib-Ribbon didn't sell a billion copies on PS3 which is a fair thing to be annoyed about. They complain but they never buy.
quote from article about vib ribbon "They were able to create that port, if you will, and we did finally end up releasing Vib-Ribbon on PS3 and PlayStation Portable as a downloadable game in the U.S. market. And that was great. A triumph. I only wish that everybody who flamed me online had then actually bought Vib-Ribbon."

this however is beautiful, we all love Vibri
a large amount of text from the same article about the concept of the rabbit vibri and her design - extracted quote "She always created backstories for her characters, and she explained to me very early on the concept of the "charm point" of a person or a character. This is an extremely important focus in Kiri's work. Notice how Vibri's eyes are so detailed compared to the rest [of her], and how they persist through her incarnations, except when she is sleeping or looking inward — but even then, you can imagine those eyes are focused inward planning, building her energy, or dreaming. In NanaOn-Sha's work the character's inner drive always shines through. To quote Parappa, "You gotta believe!""
