Daytime highs of 105°. And smol correction, it’s currently 84.7° outside at 0525. The pups don’t even want to go for walks. 4 more days. UGH. It’s supposed to cool off by Friday. (Highs of 85°/lows of 68ish.) At least it hasn’t been windy. No Santa Ana’s yet. The finicky heirloom tomatoes are

October in SoCal can be brutal. It’s currently 80° and 0430. That’s *very warm* even for us here in the desert. Haven’t been able to open up the house to cool off bc it’s too dang HOT out. We have 4 more days of this. Last night, after sundown, I went up on the roof and cleaned the solar panels.

lol, I did not buy the Japanese egg. Went back to the sale, and would’ve gotten a heck of a deal ($100), but I don’t really have a place to keep it out of the weather nor do I bbq or smoke foods enough. And bc of its age and type of clay, all wisdom said not to go over 300-350°. And keep it dry.

She’s crashed out… We’ve had a big day! Did 4 estate sales and dragged home so much gardening stuff, and a whole pile of new puppy chew toys. Heading into the 3mo old teething phase. No|Name is a metaphorical piranha ATM. Sophie is just out of frame on the right. #GoHugYourPeople #Puppies
A black and rust colored puppy, wearing a thin pastel purple collar, fast asleep. Probably a miniature pinscher, maybe mixed with chihuahua, nestled on a cream knitted blanket between two human legs on a dark blue couch. A teal “toy box” on the left.
The human and dog legs are entwined. At the top of the photo is a human foot with bright pink/red painted nails. (Lol, yes, I do have pretty toes! So does the puppy… she might even have the brindle gene, bc the red/rust markings are smutty with black stripes. Three of her feet have a small white stripe. AND they do smell like popcorn…)

RIP Kitty, my gorgeous beautiful absolutely perfect fur kid. Kitty died in my arms 8/28. I’m so very heartbroken. Everyone did all they could do to help her, everything happened so fast. In the end, her kidneys failed. And then…there was nothing that could save her. My soul went with her.

lol, OMdog, almost two weeks to head back south. I’m on the road (not driving) and should be home in about 5 more hours. Unfortunately, we tried several times to get the 100 acres of redwoods in Humboldt and just couldn’t get it done. They have our numbers, maybe they’ll change their minds. 🥺

Kitty and Sophie, my two brindle dogs at the base of a young redwood tree. The tree is big, but is still a baby in redwood years. At chest level, it has a circumference of almost 18'.

The driveway on the left goes up into the "hilly" part of the property, where it's impassible via any vehicle, and there are many hundreds of bigger trees than this one.A small stream in speckled sunlight. Several small trees have fallen across the water. A driveway on the side of a tree covered hill. The only two pictures I took in Shelter Cove, CA. If the current land deal doesn’t happen, I *might* look at buying a buildable lot in Shelter Cove. It’s definitely off the beaten path, and even getting the 35’ avion down there would be a *trip*.
The lighthouse at Shelter Cove, CA.

Picture is of a squat white lighthouse only about 3 stories tall. Has a large glassed in “light” area topped with a red roof and gold finial lightning spike. The gloomy Pacific Ocean in the background, with sand and beach bushes around the base.Black sand beach north of Shelter Cove CA. This is part of what’s called “The Lost Coast”. Because this stretch of where the Pacific Ocean meets the cliffs and mountains of California, there is very little development for dozens of miles of coastline, from Fort Bragg to the south and Eureka to the north. There’s also very few paved roads in this area of the state, making it almost impossible to get people or building supplies.

Gopher snakes are out. Have seen adults and juveniles everyday this week in various areas around the house. No rattlers spotted yet. Both puppers need a refresher avoidance training session. As they’ve gotten older, it’s much easier keeping them keeping their distance from the danger noodles.
Picture of a probable gopher snake juvenile crossing a sidewalk near my Southern California house. Snake is brownish tan with darker splotches along its body. Snake was about as thick as a thumb and 24-36” long. Snake was allowed to continue on its way. These are good snakes to have around and pose zero danger to humans or pets. As adults, they can reach 6-9 feet long. They dine on small mammals like rats, mice, pocket gophers, ground squirrels (all pests here in the desert of SoCal). They also can hunt birds, but locally it’s mostly small mammals. Non-venomous.A little closer photo of the gopher snake juveniles head and neck.
