Japanese playwright and screenwriter Kuramoto Sō has died at 91. He was best known for writing TV drama "Kita no kuni kara". Set in Furano, Hokkaido, it followed a family as they matured and learned the ways of life. He later moved to the town and set up a school for script-writers and actors.

Well, it’s almost time for me to head back to Japan. I wish my visit to the UK happened under better circumstances, it’s just unfortunate that my grandfather passed away a couple of days before I arrived last week. At least I was able to say my final goodbyes in person.

A 37-year old Japanese man has admitted to setting fire to a mosque in Ebetsu, Hokkaido. Prosecutors at Sapporo District Court are seeking 9 years in prison, with the verdict scheduled for October 29th. They also noted the man’s “resentment towards foreigners buying farming equipment from him”.

The 50th Nokkamap Icharpa, a memorial ceremony for Ainu executed by Wajin during the 1789 Menashi-Kunashir rebellion, was held on the 20th at Nokkamappu (Notka’omap), in Nemuro. The ceremony serves not only to mourn the victims but also as a place for passing their history on to future generations.

The Matsumae clan dispatched 260 soldiers who recruited Ainu chieftains to their side on the journey to put down the revolt. In the end, over 300 surrendered, with 37 of the 38 involved in the killings were executed (one guy got away).

The rebellion involved Ainu who lived on and around the Shiretoko Peninsula, Kunashiri Island and the Menashi region, who rose up against the severe exploitation and human rights abuses by the Matsumae Domain and contractor Kyūbei Hidaya.

Yesterday I visited the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. The “Living Lands” exhibition introduces various Indigenous peoples. It has one of the best permanent displays about Ainu culture outside of Japan, with many of the items coming from Scotsman Neil Gordon Munro, who lived in Nibutani.

Modern woodcarvings from Nibutani artisans such as Kaizawa Toru are also on display. The third floor of the museum also showcases a Tonkori from Sakhalin. Every time I visit, I always get a clear feeling of connection between Scotland and Ainu culture.

If you ever get to Osaka, the National Museum of Ethnology has a big room dedicated to Ainu culture which is probably the best display outside of Hokkaido

The traditional Ainu ritual Asircepnomi, in which people welcome salmon returning upstream, is being held in communities across Hokkaido this month. With the population aging, Chitose city is undertaking efforts to pass on knowledge of these traditional ceremonies to younger generations.

There’s not been as much publicity about it but a lot of Japan’s Indigenous minorities emigrated in search of a better life. Peru also has quite a big Ryukyuan diaspora, I know a Peruvian guy in Japan with Okinawan heritage

Unicode 18.0 and Emoji 18.0 have now been approved, for a total of 13,007 new characters, of which 9 are brand-new emoji codepoints. Small seal Chinese script and the Tangut script are also included in the expansion. This brings the total number of characters encoded within Unicode to 172,808.

My personal wish is that I get buried underneath a tree when it's time, however, this might be too difficult to implement in Japan as I absolutely do not wish to be cremated. This article left me a bit disappointed. If I stay in Japan long term, I think setting aside money for repatriation is best.

I think the premise is a little misleading. Using the word 埋葬 implies an actual body, rather than cremated remains is being buried. And maybe this me being used to what "tree burial" means in Scotland, but the sites look more like manicured lawns and rose gardens rather than a "return to nature".

Also, as it turns out, the game reset buttons have to be pushed together in order for it to work, which is why there is a box drawn around them on the remote interface. Feels a bit strange resetting a Super Famicom that way without going up to the system itself to press the button.

I think the issue is weak contact directly underneath the buttons, so that wouldn’t be fixed by soldering necessarily. Maybe something to improve the contact when pressed.

So I gave the remote a clean with some contact spray as well as washing the casing. I had some success - all the buttons work except for the 2, 4, 6 and 8 buttons for the channels. Decent result. Not sure how I can get the remainder of the buttons working however.

I plan on being in Japan for the medium term at least, though matter back home and potential restrictions on immigration and PR might change the calculation for the long term. I’ll have to see what Scotland is like when I go back. I certainly wouldn’t live anywhere else in the UK

Not as far as I know but those asked about why they planned to have less kids (the number of children people planning having also fell) said that cost of living and the mental burden of having a child were two main factors
