He's ready for his ride! #caturday #tabbycat #rescuekitten
We are exposing our cats to a pet stroller for walks we'll take when it cools down. Our large male tabby cat, wearing his red collar, waits patiently for us in the lavender stroller. He is ready to go! He has magnificent whiskers.

#NoKings #Nashville #A_NewHope Beautiful day to participate in American history, practice democracy, and make it known we're not okay with this administration. @markhamillofficial.bsky.social do you like my sign?
Me, in a yellow No Kings Tshirt and my straw hat for sun protection. My hat has pins given to me from various protests. My homemade sign is white letters on black cardstock, in the best Star Wars font I could paint, "I am the Aunt(ifa) you're looking for." I also free hand drew the logo for the rebellion. Behind me are thousands of Nashville protestors getting ready to line the streets.

Happy Black Cat Appreciation Day to our void, Salem (such an original name - LOL).
Handsome, sleek, black cat with vivid yellow eyes and a back bell collar peeks out from some garden shrubs along a rock border.

I haven't posted in a bit. America sadly continues it's fast track to fascism. Every day there is something that seems more and more un-American happening. The rise of ICE as a police force stealing people off the streets is alarming, the GOP protection of pediophiles and the Epstein files just disappeared, we're giving a war criminal Russian president red carpet treatment in Alaska, red states are sending national guard troops to Washington DC -- it all sounds like some crazy movie but it's happening. Good people continue to do what they can, the legal system is holding the line, mostly. California governor, Gavin Newsom, is directly engaging the hypocrisy and ridiculousness of the administration -- it's going to take a lot more.

I try not to despair and to resist by finding and celebrating joy! The rescue kittens (almost a year old) are part of that joy!

The first dahlias of the season are already in bloom! This beauty got a head start because I missed pulling a tuber and it did fine over our mild winter. I believe the variety is Sam Hopkins.
Stunning deep red Dahlia bloom, wet from a light rain. The center is light green as petals continue to unfold.

I started this post because I had deep thoughts about the state of our government. Oh, I remember now. Let's talk about what is happening with the disappearing of immigrants in the name of national security. 1) Do the work! Do the research, you will find the crimes committed by immigrants vs good 'ol white men is not even proportional. White men are exponentially more dangerous, especially for women. I empathize and feel deeply for the women whose names have become flash points because they were killed by immigrants, but it makes me sick that women killed by their husbands or boyfriends or lovers or stalkers who are white men don't get the same attention. It's kind of the same situation with the trans community - seriously focus on cleaning your own police department or church because it's FAR more likely the criminals are there, hiding in their white man privilege. 2) My mom and I were visited by the FBI post 9/11 because we had a uniform shop. We were given strict new guidance on ordering, storage, and selling of law enforcement uniforms and patches. We had a strict policy that you had to have a badge and ID before purchase. What the hell is up with the non-uniformed, non-identifable, covered face kidnappers??? Yes, I will call them kidnappers until they are clearly identified. Unreal. Why are we allowing this???

Thankfully I had Roy helping me at my desk to make it through the long work week. Our family, all six cats, and the dog are sending love to Missouri, Indiana, and Kentucky this morning. What an awful night for them. #caturday #CatsOfBlueSky #rescue #tabby
Roy, a big male black/grey/brow tabby cat, is sleeping on an office desk, his head resting on a pile of notes. Books, pens, and computer monitors are in the background. Roy's back leg/foot lazily hangs off the desk.

This week has been exhausting, capped off by a long night of tornado watches and several thunderstorm warnings. We're fine here, some high winds have knocked over some things I need to pick up, but I can't stop thinking about Somerset, KY. I was watching Ryan Hall's YouTube stream and while he remained calm and professional, you could see the fear, frustration, and disbelief in his eyes that a Major tornado was not getting a National Weather Service tornado warning. The lack of staff at the NWS - an agency gutted by the Trump Administration is just plain stupid, dangerous, and cruel. Americans were killed due to the negligence of our government. It feels like a mirror to what is happening in our country - the ability to see what is happening is there, some of us are lucky enough to have access to the information, but others remain completely in the dark. My sister questioned a Veteran, who was collecting funds in front of the grocery store asking him who he voted for. He replied that it wasn't political - he was trying to help vets. She firmly educated him that yes, yes it is political and if he voted for Trump and the Republican he voted against his best interest. He either didn't know, received faulty information (fix news), or was willfully ignorant of the services being taken away and which party/legislators were responsible for this. These are scary and troubling times we are living in. People are being picked up off the streets by ICE. ICE and law enforcement are walking around with their faces covered, glasses, no true ID - no one knows who these guys are It's kidnapping. I remember after 9/11 having to inventory every patch in our uniform shop and check IDs before selling them - now anyone can get them online. We must demand accountability.

Lenten Roses (Hellebores) are at the end of their season and the climbing roses are just getting started. I'm obsessed with my Spring flowers this week! #BloomScrolling #roses #MayDay #Beltane
Purple roses + antique green with pink edged Lenten roses in a teardrop shaped glass vase against a dark wall.

May Day - Spring, a celebration of the fullness of Spring, the cusp of summer. (Beltane to many who celebrate)

May Day - A celebration of workers and their labor, the continued fight for fair laws and policies that protect and care for people.

Mayday - An emergency signal, usually associated with aviation, spoken three times to indicate a serious emergency.

All three feel especially urgent and necessary this year. What is happening? How do we have a government that is shipping people away to prisons on foreign soil, without due process? American citizens? A government that is collapsing the economy? A government that is making our lives more dangerous?

The flowers and cats keep me grounded. They bring me joy. But they are a distraction from the real work we must do as citizens, as We the people.

Late for #caturday again! Six cats and always posting pictures of Roy, he's just so photogenic! He is one of our four #rescue kittens. Roy is always belly up. #CatsOfBlueSky
Shorthair tabby laying belly-up on a black office chair. All four paws are in the air. He's got a red collar and bell.

This week has seen some push back by the courts/judicial, but more horrific and troubling activity. US citizen, American born children being taken out of the US and to "detention camps"? A judge arrested? Who the f#$& are these people who would carry out such orders? Who wakes up and thinks "today I'm going to act like a Nazi"? Scary and troubling, and here I am quietly writing about it in text no one reads? Where is my public courage and loud descent? I go to protests, but where is my courage to do more?

The masses will become angry enough to loudly shout down the government and say "no more, not in my name" - of course too late for the years of atrocities committed or condoned by our country (Gaza and countless others), but only when the resources dry up, or some one they know, or a member of their family is abducted. Oh America, you could have been so much more. The sense of entitlement is overwhelming. How long will it take?

This week the Pope died. I am not Catholic. My Italian grandmother was, and the ceremony around the church and Pope is fascinating, yet again another troubling history, but, I like to think this Pope, Francis, did act on his beliefs rather than buy into the politics and money of the Church? He seemed a decent man and I hope his replacement adds to a more just, kind, accepting church and world view than to the horrible men we are allowing power to now.

I don't have enough space to write how I feel that the wrongs in the world right now are all caused by the fragile ego men who seek power and wealth over love.

Cookie is enjoying some outside time on this lovely #caturday. She is a wise old lady cat, who came to us many years ago as a "rescue". Turns out she was mostly feral. Over the years she has learned to enjoy her spoiled indoor life, but she still loves her outdoor visits.
Older grey cat walks through grass and mixed vegetation, including wild violets. She's in a fenced yard. The sun is bright!

I've been thinking a lot about my Grandma this week. She was this spicy little Italian woman. She came to the United States as a young girl. She told us how hard it was in Brooklyn, being a foreigner. The other kids would call her names and spit on her. She said it made her want to learn English faster. She loved America - even after the ugliness she experienced as a child. Did it end when she was a child? No. I remember coming back from San Diego on the I-15, she joined our other grandparents on a day trip. I remember being at one of the check stations and her being profiled - her dark Mediterranean skin and jet black hair made the officers ask if she was a citizen. We all got questioned. It was scary as a young kid. I thought they were going to take my grandma. It was the 1980s. What the hell are we doing as a country, a society, as humans to be so freaking awful to each other? We've lost something. We've lost our soul. We've lost the vision of a "more perfect union". Why don't we embrace and value our differences? Those differences, woven together to create a beautiful and unique tapestry are what makes/made America the dream.

Tabby cat with red collar and bell hides within the various plants on a window shelf. He looks mischievous.

Speaking of something out of place - I read a post this morning that I strongly agree with, it was something to the effect of "This is not the America I loved as a kid. As I've grown older, and especially now, I realize that America didn't exist anyway. I demand we create that vision of America now." It hit hard because as GenX I get that we are the most supportive of this Administration (it crushes my soul), but there are also those of us who grew up with this vision of America the great, everyone wanted our freedoms and culture. We had the Space Shuttle and Space Camp. We had Star Trek and Star Wars. We had the best scientists and universities and we were headed towards an amazing future where there wasn't illness and hunger or war. But, we also had the shadow of nuclear weapons and Red Dawn. Of course, as I grew up and learned more I realized the glossy image I had hid dark truths and history. It makes me angry that we can't acknowledge our flaws, learn from them, and then grow as a peaceful, productive, caring society. We've got to get loud. We've got to object, fiercely, to the injustices being committed in our name. End stage capitalism is shit. War is stupid. Disappearing people is terrifying (which, didn't just start - our Native sisters have been begging us to help them forever), but government sanctioned prisoners? NO. We the people...demand better.

Today we went to Elizabeth Warren's town hall meeting in Nashville. Funny, she isn't our Senator, but at least she has the courage to show up! It was a great turnout, a good reminder that we're not crazy and everything happening is so very wrong. This week has been crazy. My love, who has been blind since birth and receiving SSI for the blind, lost half his health insurance. Thanks Elon. It was my birthday and we spent much of the overnight and early morning hours in our safe closet due to endless tornado warnings. The government cutting NOAA and NWS staff and funding is stupid! Guess what? We ended up back in the safe space today for another tornado/storm. What's more stupid this week? Weather or tariffs? The long term impacts are going to be painful.

It's not #caturday, but this is what hours of 🌪️ warnings looks like for my crew. The old ladies get their own soft sided carriers, three of the #rescues go in the big crate, and one in the walking backpack. Big dog gets me for a pillow. Incredible storm coverage by the @nashseverewx.com team!

Bottom left: big yellow lab/hound mix laying across my lap with his front paw over my leg. Bottom right: kitten laying down in the crate with her paw sticking out. We're all in the closet (our only interior room/safe spot).

Where do I even begin to rage? Cutting NOAA and NWS jobs and funding is STUPID. Cutting FEMA - do you see the states impacted by the worst of environmental change??? Why do we keep shooting ourselves in the foot?? Red state voters...I live here and I HATE how you vote. For those of you that don't vote, I am equally angry but know that you've been lied to and discouraged and under educated. A week of these storms, the flooding, tariffs, and layoff caused by tariffs -- this is an economic super-storm. I don't know how the South recovers?

My ever watchful Salem. He was/is the Alpha of the rescue kittens. He's slowly learning his place with the old lady cats and he has the biggest crush on Tonks. I always wanted a little black cat 🪄 magic in our house. #caturday #catsofbluesky #rescue #blackcats #void
Black cat on wooden floors looking towards a door, you cannot see the window in the door, or the birds sitting on the wreath that's outside, but spring sunlight casts a lovely glow.

My mom and sister went to the AOC/Bernie event in Denver yesterday. My mom was part of a protest at Gabe Evan's office earlier in the week. I love her activism! Some of the older folks were thinking about a bus trip to protest in DC, but it made me think that maybe that money and time is better spent in local communities to help bridge the gap. I absolutely believe my mom and my kids (in their early 20s) are far more aligned in this political and economic environment. My kids were far more onboard with Bernie from the beginning of their political education/growth. Their lives have been one crisis, emergency after another with a quick grasp of Obama HOPE in the middle. But even then they saw the gross discrimination and ugly side of America. I'm GenX and I'm trying to wrap my mind around how we're here. Weren't we raised to "hate" the Russians? Red Dawn, space race, the Hunt for Red October. I feel like the assholes from my high school and college debate teams are fully embracing this oligarchy (or whatever it's turning into). I am dumbfounded by the level of greed, hate, lack of compassion. Yes, I clearly see my privilege as a middle-age, white woman. And yes, I've spent years reading, listening, and educating myself - trying to balance the America I saw through rose tinted glasses and through the eyes of my depression era, WWII, and immigrant grandparents with the very real fact that we haven't always been so great and we have a lot of work to do. I hold onto their vision as we work to save each other from our current situation.

What were you distracted by this week? Spring is here and this crew enjoyed open windows and birds. #caturday #catsofbluesky #rescue
Three cats, standing on a desk, looking out a window. The cats on the left and right are short hair tabby cats, the one in the middle is a short hair black cat. All three are wearing reflective collars. The sun is bright, so you can't see what they are looking at (but I can tell you it's birds).

It's been a long week! Someone said it's been 8 caturdays since this new administration - it feels like it's been much longer. I'm pretty sure the chaos is the goal. Keep us distracted. I mean, I'm posting cat pictures rather than doing the real work of keeping American democracy alive. But, as it's chopped up and shown to us, maybe it wasn't all it was cracked up to be? And to be fair - I'm a privileged, middle-age, middle-class, white woman. I am the granddaughter of depression era and WWII grandparents on my mom's side and Italian immigrants on my dad's side. They made me believe in American exceptionalism and the American dream. I wanted us all to be so much better than we are now. There is much work to be done.

We are experiencing an assault on science unparalleled by anything I’ve seen in my life. It’s not one issue or another anymore, the entire institution is under attack by the most powerful individuals in the country. This Friday, where will you be? standupforscience2025.org

I missed #caturday. This is Roy, Roy-boy, LeeRoy - named after Ted Lasso's Roy Kent, because "he's here, he's there, he's every f@#$ing where." Except when he's taking a sweet little cat nap. He's the largest of the four rescue kittens. #rescue #catsofbluesky
Big grey/brown tabby cat sleeping on his side, tucked into a blue comforter that has green leaves in the print. The cat wears a red collar. I hope he's dreaming of peace.

I missed Saturday, it's been a busy and stressful week. I've never been more shocked and ashamed of our ridiculous government than the treatment of President Zeleanski by JD Vance and Trump. Astonishing. The world response is justified. I hate it for my country, but bad behavior must not be rewarded! Fragile men.

Encouraging to see the resistance slowly heating up. People are gathering. They are remembering that their elected officials are their employees and not their bosses. Protests at Tesla are calling out Elon. The protests at our National Parks, not covered by the media, are inspiring! The actions of Lucy the snow reporter at Sugarbush Ski Resort in Vermont were perfection! She called out the government and JD Vance and the mountain showed up! Great job Vermont!!

If you are gutting healthcare and food assistance for millions of Americans, you are absolutely not “pro life.”
