Summary:

He likes his job, really. The scent of coffee reminds him of home, his sisters and mam relying on the stuff like it's the nectar of the gods. He likes Martha, likes how no-nonsense but caring she is, always making sure John takes his heat leave, lets him have first pick of the leftover treats and looks the other way when he brews himself a pick-me-up. Likes that it's close to his flat and pays well enough to let him live alone.

And for the most part, he likes his customers. His regulars - Lindsay, the shy uni student who likes to use the shop as a place to do her schoolwork, tucks herself neatly in a corner booth with her big headphones and mug of tea and the most blueberry-heavy muffin on offer. Mickey, the older retired bloke who flirts with everyone in that charming, harmless way. Jeanette, his neighbor, whose schedule often aligns so that John walks home with her, helps her with her shopping and watches the kids while she gets settled, leaves her flat above his with a home-cooked meal big enough to feed him for days.

And…Simon. He really, really likes seeing Simon.
